Abstract

Exemplary embodiments relate to improvements in the design of a messaging inbox. The inbox may display different units or “modules” for providing a user with quick access to different inbox functionalities that they might not otherwise be aware of (or inclined to use on a regular basis). After a number of recent or unread messages are shown in the inbox's initial interface, the messages end and are replaced with modules. Many different types of functionality may be the subject of the modules (e.g., a module for sharing local content such as photos from a photo album, a People/States module, Top Contacts, New Behavior, Live Videos, Events, Businesses, or Messaging Stickers). Once the available modules have been scrolled through, the interface may revert to more messages, such as less-recent or previously read threads from the original messages. Unread threads may also be collapsed in the top section of the inbox, or included in a module.

Claims (65)

1. A method, comprising:

displaying an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first set of messages or message threads, the first set containing a minimum number of unread messages or message threads having unread messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging service different from the message or message thread presentation features; and

a third portion, following the second portion, for displaying a listing of a second set of messages or message threads;

determining that the user has read one of the unread messages or message threads from the first set of messages; and

automatically moving the read message or message thread from the first set of messages displayed in the first portion of the inbox to the second set of messages displayed in the third portion of the inbox based on the determination that the message or message thread has been read by the user.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining a maximum number of messages or message threads that can be displayed in the first portion of the inbox.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

determining that a total number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

displaying the maximum number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox; and

displaying the remaining unread messages or message threads in the third portion of the inbox.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

determining that a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is below the maximum number; and

moving one or more unread messages or message threads from the third portion of the inbox to the first portion of the inbox.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

determining that a number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is less than the maximum number;

displaying additional read messages or message threads received within a defined recency in the first portion of the inbox, until a number of unread and read messages and message threads displayed in the first portion of the inbox is equal to the maximum number.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining that a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is below the minimum number; and

moving messages or message threads from the third portion of the inbox to the first portion of the inbox until a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox equals the minimum number.

7. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium storing instructions configured to cause a processor to:

display an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first set of messages or message threads, the first set containing a minimum number of unread messages or message threads having unread messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging service different from the message or message thread presentation features;

a third portion, following the second portion, for displaying a listing of a second set of messages or message threads;

determine that the user has read one of the unread messages or message threads from the first set of messages; and

automatically move the read message or message thread from the first set of messages displayed in the first portion of the inbox to the second set of messages displayed in the third portion of the inbox based on the determination that the message or message thread has been read by the user.

8. The medium of claim 7 storing further instructions configured to cause the processor to:

determine a maximum number of messages or message threads that can be displayed in the first portion of the inbox.

9. The medium of claim 8 storing further instructions configured to cause the processor to:

determine that a total number of unread messages or message threads in the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

display the maximum number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox; and

display the remaining unread messages or message threads in the third portion of the inbox.

10. The medium of claim 8 storing further instructions configured to cause the processor to:

determine that a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is below the maximum number; and

automatically move one or more unread messages or message threads from the third portion of the inbox to the first portion of the inbox.

11. The medium of claim 7 storing further instructions configured to cause the processor to:

determine that a number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is less than the maximum number; and

display additional read messages or message threads received within a defined recency in the first portion of the inbox, until a number of unread and read messages and message threads displayed in the first portion of the inbox is equal to the maximum number.

12. The medium of claim 7 storing further instructions configured to cause the processor to:

determine that a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is below the minimum number; and

automatically move messages or message threads from the third portion of the inbox to the first portion of the inbox until a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox equals the minimum number.

13. An apparatus comprising:

software comprising instructions for displaying an inbox interface for a messaging service in a user interface view; and

a processor configured to execute the instructions, the instructions configured to cause the processor to:

display an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first set of messages or message threads, the first set containing unread messages or message threads having unread messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging service different from the message or message thread presentation features; and

a third portion, following the second portion, for displaying a listing of a second set of messages or message threads;

determine that the user has read one of the unread messages or message threads from the first set of messages; and

automatically move the read message or message thread from the first set of messages displayed in the first portion of the inbox to the second set of messages displayed in the third portion of the inbox based on the determination that the message or message thread has been read by the user.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , the software comprising further instructions configuring the processor to:

determine a maximum number of messages or message threads that can be displayed in the first portion of the inbox.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , the software comprising further instructions configuring the processor to:

determine that a total number of unread messages or message threads in the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

display the maximum number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox; and

display the remaining unread messages or message threads in the third portion of the inbox.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 , the software comprising further instructions configuring the processor to:

determine that a number of messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is below the maximum number; and

automatically move one or more unread messages or message threads from the third portion of the inbox to the first portion of the inbox.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 , the software comprising further instructions configuring the processor to:

determine that a number of unread messages or message threads in the first portion of the inbox is less than the maximum number; and

display additional read messages or message threads received within a defined recency in the first portion of the inbox, until a number of unread and read messages and message threads displayed in the first portion of the inbox is equal to the maximum number.
