Abstract

A method for receiving and ejecting molded articles includes: (a) drawing air from a cooling tube cavity into an air channel through a plate bore to draw at least a portion of a molded article into the cavity; (b) moving a valve within the plate bore from a first position for conducting air from the cavity to the air channel to a second position for reducing air flow through the plate bore relative to the first position; and (c) when the valve is in the second position, urging pressurized air from the air channel to the cavity through the plate bore to assist ejection of the molded article from the cavity.

Claims (13)

1. A method for receiving and ejecting molded articles, comprising:

a) drawing air from a cavity of a cooling tube into an air channel of a cooling plate to draw a portion of a molded article into the cavity, the air drawn through an air flow gap between a movable closure member and a valve seat fixed to a movable ejector member; and

b) after step (a), urging pressurized air from the air channel toward the cavity, the pressurized air moving the closure member into engagement with the valve seat to close the air flow gap, and the pressurized air advancing the ejector member relative to the cooling tube to assist ejection of the molded article from the cavity.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein advancing the ejector member relative to the cooling tube comprises urging a leading end of the ejector member forward through a cavity bore open to the base of the cavity to bear against the molded article and eject it from the cavity.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein advancing the ejector member relative to the cooling tube comprises urging pressurized air into a piston chamber adjacent the air channel of the cooling plate, the ejector member comprising a piston slidably retained in the piston chamber and an ejector pin extending between the ejector piston and the leading end of the ejector.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein moving the ejector member from the retracted toward the advanced position moves opens a second air flow gap of a second air flow channel by moving the leading end of the ejector member from a position in sealed sliding fit with the inner diameter of the cavity bore when the ejector is in the retracted position, to a position spaced apart from the inner diameter of the cavity bore.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein step (b) comprises continuing urging pressurized air into the piston chamber while the first and second flow passages are closed to maximize an ejection force generated by the air pressure when breaking the molded article free from the cavity.

6. A method for receiving and ejecting molded articles, comprising:

a) drawing air from a cavity of a cooling tube into an air channel of a cooling plate to draw a portion of a molded article into the cavity, the air drawn through a first flow passage in a movable ejector member when the ejector member is in a retracted position relative to the cooling tube, the first flow passage comprising a first air flow gap between a valve seat fixed to the movable ejector member and closure member movable relative to the valve seat; and

b) after step (a), urging pressurized air from the air channel toward the cavity, the pressurized air moving the closure member into engagement with the valve seat to obstruct the first air flow passage by closing the first air flow gap, and the pressurized air advancing the ejector member relative to the cooling tube to assist ejection of the molded article from the cavity.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein moving the ejector member toward the advanced position opens a second flow passage extending between the air flow channel of the cooling plate and the cavity for directing pressurized air to the cavity to continue exerting an ejection force on the molded article after the ejector member has reached its end of stroke in the advanced position.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein opening the second air flow passage comprises opening a second air flow gap by moving a leading end of the ejector member from a position in sealed sliding fit with the inner diameter of a cavity bore at the base of the cavity when the ejector is in the retracted position, to a position spaced apart from the inner diameter of the cavity bore.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising closing the second air flow passage when the ejector member is moved to the retracted position by closing the second air flow gap, so that when urging the ejector member out of the fully retracted position toward the advanced position, both the first and second air flow passages are closed to maximize an ejection force generated by the air pressure when breaking the molded article free from the cavity.
