Abstract

A system for mounting a light emitting diode (LED) wave guide down light retrofit fixture. The system can include a mounting plate having a number of apertures symmetrically positioned around a center of the mounting plate. The system can also include at least one fastening device mechanically coupled to an upper surface of the mounting plate using at least a first aperture of the apertures, where the at least one fastening device mechanically couples to a base of an existing fixture. The system can further include a coupling device mechanically coupled to a lower surface of the mounting plate. The system can also include a trim assembly having a frame and a LED light source mechanically coupled to the frame. The frame can have a coupling feature disposed on a top surface of the frame, where the coupling feature mechanically couples to the coupling device.

Claims (28)

1. A surface-mounted light emitting diode (LED) fixture, comprising:

a frame comprising a top surface that has a first aperture disposed therethrough;

a reflector plate removably coupled to the frame, wherein the reflector plate is disposed in the first aperture when the reflector plate is coupled to the frame, wherein the reflector plate has a bottom surface comprising a reflective material, wherein the reflector plate further has an aperture that traverses therethrough, wherein the aperture has a size and a location that are configured to allow for a wire to be disposed therein without affecting light reflected off of the bottom surface.

2. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 1 , wherein the bottom surface of the reflector plate is disposed above and adjacent to a light guide.

3. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 2 , wherein the reflector plate is at least as large as the light guide.

4. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 1 , wherein the reflector plate further comprises at least one extension that includes at least one first coupling feature, wherein the frame comprises at least one recess disposed adjacent to the first aperture, wherein the at least one recess comprises at least one second coupling feature, wherein the first coupling feature and the at least one second coupling feature are coupled to each other when the reflector plate is coupled to the frame.

5. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 4 , wherein the at least one first coupling feature comprises a second aperture and the at least one second coupling feature comprises a third aperture, wherein the second aperture of the at least one first coupling feature and the third aperture of the at least one second coupling feature have a fastening device disposed therein when the reflector plate is coupled to the frame.

6. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 1 , wherein the top surface of the frame and the reflector plate form a single plane when the reflector plate is coupled to the frame.

7. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 1 , further comprising:

a mounting plate coupled to and disposed atop the frame and the reflector plate.

8. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 1 , wherein the top surface of the frame further comprises at least one receiving feature for receiving the reflector plate when the reflector plate is coupled to the frame.

9. A surface-mounted light emitting diode (LED) fixture, comprising:

a frame comprising a top surface;

a mounting plate removeably coupled to the top surface of the frame, wherein

when the mounting plate is coupled to the frame the mounting plate acts as a top cover to enclose, a reflector plate, and at least one LED array within the frame; and

at least one fastening device capable of mounting the mounting plate to a junction box recessed in a ceiling.

10. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 9 , wherein the top surface of the frame and the mounting plate form a single plane when the mounting plate is coupled to the frame.

11. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 9 , wherein the mounting plate further comprises at least one first coupling feature, wherein the frame comprises at least one second coupling feature, wherein the at least one first coupling feature and the at least one second coupling feature are coupled to each other when the mounting plate is coupled to the frame.

12. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 9 , further comprising:

a LED driver mechanically coupled to an upper surface of the mounting plate, wherein the LED driver is electrically coupled to the at least one LED array.

13. The surface-mounted LED fixture of claim 12 , wherein the LED driver is removably coupled to the mounting plate.

14. A light emitting diode (LED) fixture, comprising:

a planar light guide located inside a frame;

at least one LED array disposed adjacent to at least one side of the planar light guide, wherein the at least one LED array directs light into the at least one side of the planar light guide;

a mounting plate; and

at least one fastening device capable of mounting the mounting plate to a junction box recessed in a ceiling, wherein the mounting plate includes at least one coupling feature used to removably couple the mounting plate to the frame.

15. The LED fixture of claim 14 , further comprising:

a reflector plate disposed adjacent to a top surface of the planar light guide, wherein the reflector plate comprises a reflective material that reflects light emitted by the at least one LED array.
