Abstract

A tunable wavelength laser comprising a laser cavity formed by a broadband mirror and a comb mirror. The laser cavity comprising a gain region. The laser cavity is configured such that a non-integer number of cavity modes of the laser cavity are between two consecutive reflection peaks of the comb mirror.

3. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 2 , wherein the wavelength range comprises at least one of a first range of 1250 nm to 1360 nm, a second range of 1500 nm to 1580 nm, or a third range of 1600 nm to 1700 nm.

4. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , further comprising one or more electrodes configured to provide electrical current or voltage to move the plurality of reflection peaks of the first comb reflector and/or the second comb reflector with respect to the plurality of cavity modes to select a desired lasing wavelength.

5. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , wherein the first comb reflector and the second comb reflector comprise a periodically chirped reflector, a superstructure grating, or a sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector.

6. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , wherein the laser comprises a hybrid combination of gain material integrated to a passive material.

7. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , wherein the first comb reflector and the second comb reflector have the same reflectivity and/or the same effective free spectral range as one another.

8. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , wherein the first comb reflector and/or the second comb reflector are configured to be electrically controlled such that at least one of the plurality of reflection peaks overlaps with one of the plurality of cavity modes.

9. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , wherein the first comb reflector and/or the second comb reflector are configured to be thermally controlled such that at least one of the plurality of reflection peaks overlaps with one of the plurality of cavity modes.

10. The wavelength tunable laser of claim 1 , further comprising a second phase section, wherein the second phase section is configured to be controlled such that at least one of the plurality of reflection peaks overlaps with one of the plurality of cavity modes.
