Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatuses for providing instillation therapy with a negative-pressure source are described. The apparatus can include a housing having a dosing chamber and a negative-pressure chamber fluidly isolated from each other. The apparatus can also include a moveable barrier disposed in the housing between the dosing chamber and the negative-pressure chamber. The housing includes a fluid inlet in fluid communication with the dosing chamber and a fluid outlet in fluid communication with the dosing chamber. The housing can also include a negative-pressure inlet in fluid communication with the negative-pressure chamber and a biasing element coupled to the moveable barrier. The biasing element is operable to move the moveable barrier between a charge position and a discharge position.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining if the cartridge has a full dose of fluid comprises:

if the rate of change of negative pressure is stable, determining that that the cartridge has a full dose of fluid; and

if the rate of change of negative pressure is not stable, determining that the cartridge does not have a full dose of fluid.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein:

if the cartridge does not have a full dose of fluid, monitoring the pressure at the negative-pressure source; and

if the cartridge does have a full dose of fluid, turning off the negative-pressure source, starting a timer, and determining if the fluid source is empty.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining if the fluid source is empty comprises:

if the rate of change of negative pressure exceeds an expected rate of change of negative pressure, determining that the fluid source is empty; and

if the rate of change of negative pressure does not exceed the expected rate of change of negative pressure, determining that the fluid source is not empty.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

if the fluid source is empty, providing an empty fluid source error; and

if the fluid source is not empty, determining if a fluid outlet is blocked.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining if the fluid outlet is blocked comprises:

if the negative pressure does not change, determining that that the fluid outlet is blocked; and

if the negative pressure changes, determining that the fluid outlet is not blocked.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

if the fluid outlet is blocked, providing a blockage error; and

if the fluid outlet is not blocked, determining if the timer has expired.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein:

if the timer has not expired, determining if the fluid source is empty; and

if the timer has expired, determining if a total volume of instill fluid has been delivered.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

if the total volume of instill fluid has not been delivered, turning on the negative-pressure source; and

if the total volume of instill fluid has been delivered, providing a total instill volume dispensed message.

12. A method for determining a mode of a therapy system, the method comprising:

providing a negative pressure using a negative-pressure source;

calculating a rate of change of the negative pressure;

providing negative-pressure therapy in response to the rate of change of negative pressure being less than a threshold rate of change of negative pressure; and

providing instillation therapy in response to the rate of change of negative pressure being approximately equal to the threshold rate of change of negative pressure, wherein providing instillation therapy comprises:

monitoring the negative pressure; and

calculating a second rate of change of the negative pressure.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein providing negative-pressure therapy further comprises:

determining if a canister is full; and

if the canister is not full, providing negative-pressure therapy.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein providing instillation therapy further comprises:

determining if a fluid source is empty based on the second rate of change of negative pressure;

if the fluid source is empty, providing an empty fluid source error; and

if the fluid source is not empty, determining if a cartridge has a full dose of fluid.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein determining if the cartridge has a full dose of fluid comprises:

if the rate of change of negative pressure is stable, determining that that the cartridge has a full dose of fluid; and

if the rate of change of negative pressure is not stable, determining that the cartridge does not have a full dose of fluid.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein:

if the cartridge does not have a full dose of fluid, monitoring the pressure at the negative-pressure source; and

if the cartridge does have a full dose of fluid, turning off the negative-pressure source, starting a timer, and determining if the fluid source is empty.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein determining if the fluid source is empty comprises:

if the rate of change of negative pressure exceeds an expected rate of change of negative pressure, determining that the fluid source is empty; and

if the rate of change of negative pressure does not exceed the expected rate of change of negative pressure, determining that the fluid source is not empty.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein:

if the fluid source is empty, providing an empty fluid source error; and

if the fluid source is not empty, determining if a fluid outlet is blocked.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein determining if the fluid outlet is blocked comprises:

if the negative pressure does not change, determining that that the fluid outlet is blocked; and

if the negative pressure changes, determining that the fluid outlet is not blocked.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

if the fluid outlet is blocked, providing a blockage error; and

if the fluid outlet is not blocked, determining if the timer has expired.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein:

if the timer has not expired, determining if the fluid source is empty; and

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

if the total volume of instill fluid has not been delivered, turning on the negative-pressure source; and

if the total volume of instill fluid has been delivered, providing a total instill volume dispensed message.

23. An apparatus for providing negative-pressure therapy and instillation therapy, the apparatus comprising:

a negative-pressure source; and

a controller configured to:

calculate a rate of change of negative pressure generated by the negative-pressure source,

provide negative-pressure therapy in response to the rate of change of negative pressure being less than a threshold rate of change,

provide instillation therapy in response to the rate of change being greater than a threshold rate of change, and

calculate a second rate of change of negative pressure during instillation therapy.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein a rate of change of negative pressure less than the threshold rate of change indicates a canister is coupled to the apparatus, and a rate of change of negative pressure greater than the threshold rate of change indicates a fluid source is coupled to the apparatus.
