Abstract

Example systems and methods of a wireless device use a signal attribute detector to determine a signal attribute value associated with a first frame received via a first antenna. Media access control (MAC) logic can detect that the first frame indicates an acknowledgement (ACK) of a second frame transmitted by the wireless device. Responsive to the detection of the ACK by the MAC logic, an antenna evaluator uses the signal attribute value to select one of the first antenna and the second antenna to transmit or receive a third frame.

responsive to an expiration of the antenna dwell period and using an aggregated signal quality value, selecting a second antenna for a subsequent transmission, wherein the aggregated signal quality value is based on the first signal quality value and the one or more additional signal quality values, and wherein selecting the second antenna comprises:

determining that the aggregated signal quality value is at or below a threshold signal quality value; and

causing the subsequent transmission via the second antenna.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detecting of the WLAN ACK frame comprises determining that a plurality of bit values in a header of the WLAN ACK frame indicate an ACK frame type.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first signal quality value associated with the first WLAN PHY frame comprises determining the first RSSI value from a plurality of bit values in a header of the first WLAN PHY frame.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting that a second WLAN PHY frame received via the first antenna includes one of a WLAN beacon frame or a WLAN data frame;

responsive to detecting the one of the WLAN beacon frame or the WLAN data frame, determining a second RSSI value associated with the second WLAN PHY frame; and

using the second RSSI value to determine the first signal quality value associated with the first antenna.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal quality value indicates a signal-to-noise ratio value associated with the first antenna.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aggregated signal quality value comprises an average signal quality value of:

the first signal quality value, and

the one or more additional signal quality values, wherein each of the one or more additional signal quality values is associated with the RSSI of a corresponding frame of the one or more additional frames.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the subsequent transmission via the second antenna comprises generating a signal to switch a transceiver of the wireless device from being coupled to the first antenna to being coupled to the second antenna.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold signal quality value characterizes signal quality of the second antenna during a previous antenna dwell period.

9. A communication device comprising:

a plurality of antennas;

a transceiver configured to couple with the plurality of antennas, the transceiver to cause a transmission of an outgoing signal via a first antenna of the plurality of antennas;

a memory system configured to store instructions; and

one or more processors coupled to the memory system, wherein the one or more processors are to execute the instructions to implement:

a signal attribute detector configured to detect a first received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value associated with a first WLAN physical layer (PHY) frame received through the transceiver via the first antenna,

media access control (MAC) logic configured to detect that the first WLAN PHY frame includes a WLAN acknowledgement (ACK) frame, and responsive to detection of the WLAN ACK frame within a timeout period from the transmission of the outgoing signal, cause the first RSSI value to be stored in the memory system, and

an antenna evaluator configured to:

use the first RSSI value stored in the memory to determine a first signal quality value associated with the first antenna;

determine one or more additional signal quality values, wherein each of the one or more additional signal quality values is associated with a respective frame of one or more additional frames transmitted or received during an antenna dwell period;

determine that an aggregated signal quality value is below a threshold signal quality value, wherein the aggregated signal quality value is based on the first signal quality value and the one or more additional signal quality values; and

responsive to an expiration of the antenna dwell period, select a second antenna of the plurality of antennas for a subsequent transmission.

10. The communication device of claim 9 , wherein the MAC logic is configured to detect the WLAN ACK frame based on a plurality of bits in a header of the WLAN ACK frame.

11. The communication device of claim 9 , wherein the MAC logic is configured to determine the first RSSI value from a plurality of bit values in a header of the PHY frame.
