Abstract

An adjustable additive cartridge that provides adjustable metering of additive to a base fluid as the base fluid is flowing through the cartridge. A spout is mounted for limited rotation within a base element of the cartridge. Rotation of the spout results in varying degrees of flow of additive into a base fluid flow path through the cartridge. The cartridge may be used with a portable beverage container, such as a sports bottle or off-the-shelf water bottle. The supply of base fluid in a container used with the cartridge may be kept in an unmixed, pure state, and other cartridges, each having different additives (i.e., flavors) may be used interchangeably with the same base fluid supply. The cartridge allows a consumer/user to experience different additives, such as different flavors or supplement compositions, for a given supply of base liquid in a single container. A check valve on the cartridge prevents backflow of the base fluid. An integrated filter for filtering base fluid flowing into the cartridge may be provided. The additive cartridge may be sealed to provide for extended storage and to provide a user/consumer with evidence of integrity, quality and/or tampering prior to purchase and/or use. Visual and tactile indicators of the amount of additive being added to a base fluid may be provided. A container may retain a spare additive adjustable cartridge on the container.

Claims (25)

1. A cap-mounted additive system arranged to engage with a liquid container comprising:

a base liquid flow path extending through the cap-mounted additive system;

an inlet port through which base liquid in the liquid container flows to enter the base liquid flow path;

a mixed liquid outlet for delivering mixed liquid from the base liquid flow path to a user;

a check valve having a valve element configured to control flow through the inlet port and into the base liquid flow path;

an additive reservoir holding additive;

an additive flow path from the additive reservoir to the base liquid flow path;

wherein the base liquid flow path and additive flow path are arranged such that flow of base liquid in the base liquid flow path causes flow of additive from the additive flow path and into the base liquid flow path;

an adjustable size metering opening adapted to control flow of additive from the additive reservoir to the base liquid flow path; and

a rotatable element positioned in the base liquid flow path downstream of the check valve so as to contact base liquid and adapted to permit a user to adjust the adjustable size metering opening,

wherein the rotatable element has an upstream end nearer the check valve than a downstream end, and is configured such that flow from the check valve to the mixed liquid outlet flows from the upstream end to the downstream end.

2. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the check valve is configured to prevent base liquid from flowing out of the base liquid flow path through the inlet port.

3. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a base adapted to engage a cap of the liquid container and a spout that is adapted to rotate relative to the base.

4. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 3 , wherein rotation of the spout adjusts an amount of additive that flows through the adjustable size metering opening.

5. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , the rotatable element comprising at least one rotatable surface for controlling flow through the adjustable size metering opening.

6. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable size metering opening is configured to permit complete obstruction of the flow of additive to allow only base liquid to flow from the mixed liquid outlet.

7. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising the liquid container and a cap cooperating with the liquid container, wherein the cap-mounted additive delivery system is mounted on the cap.

8. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a base including a threaded collar for engaging a correspondingly threaded portion of a cap of the liquid container and

wherein the additive reservoir is arranged to extend within an interior of the liquid container when the cap-mounted additive delivery system is installed on the liquid container.

9. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the additive flow path is fluidly coupled to the base liquid flow path between the inlet port and the mixed liquid outlet.

10. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the base liquid flow path and additive flow path are configured such that base liquid is prevented from flowing into the additive reservoir.

11. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a filtration element arranged to filter the base liquid before the base liquid enters the inlet port.

12. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a filter having a portion disposed about the inlet port.

13. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a spout defining at least part of the base liquid flow path and the mixed liquid outlet, wherein the spout is rotatable and wherein rotation of the spout adjusts flow of additive in the adjustable size metering opening.

14. The cap-mounted additive delivery system of claim 13 , wherein the spout comprises a stem extending from the spout.
