Abstract

Methods, devices, and systems for migration or sharing of existing M2M service layer sessions are disclosed. In one embodiment, a Session Migration and Sharing Function (SMSF) performs the migration or sharing of a M2M service layer session. Various forms of service layer session context may be used to enable the migration and sharing of M2M service layer sessions.

Claims (24)

1. A first node in a network comprising a processor and a memory, the memory storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, implement a service layer instance of the first node and cause the first node to perform operations comprising:

managing, at the first node, a service layer session established between the service layer instance of the first node and a first application executing on a device in the network, wherein the service layer session further enables a communication session between a second application executing on a second node in the network and the first application executing on the device; and

in response to a trigger condition indicating that the communication session between the second application and the first application is to be migrated to or shared with a third application on a third node in the network, transmitting one or more requests to an underlying access network node to migrate a first underlying network connection between the device and the second node to a second underlying network connection between the device and the third node.

The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node is configured to share service layer session schedule information with the underlying access network node, wherein the underlying access network node is configured to use the service layer session schedule information to migrate the first underlying access network connection between the device and the second node to the second underlying network connection between the device and the third node.

3. The first node of claim 2 , wherein the service layer session schedule information includes times when the service layer session is active/in-active.

4. The first node of claim 3 , wherein the service layer session schedule information further includes a session migration schedule.

5. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate tear-down and/or retiring of underlying access network connections no longer required by a session participant.

6. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate an update of underlying access network connections with new information regarding a session participant for which a service layer session has been migrated to or shared with.

7. The first node of claim 6 , wherein the new information is related to a location of the session participant.

8. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate an establishment of new underlying access network connections to support a new session participant for which a service layer session has been migrated to or shared with.

9. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node is configured to store context information associated with the service layer session, the context information including at least information concerning underlying access network connections.

The first node of claim 9 , wherein the first node is configured to send update of the context information to the second node, wherein the second node is configured to update, based on receiving an indication that the context information stored at the first node has been updated, context information stored at the second node.

11. A method performed by a first node in a network, the method comprising:

managing, at the first node, a service layer session established between the service layer instance of the first node and a first application executing on a device in the network, wherein the service layer session further enables a communication session between a second application executing on a second node in the network and the first application executing on the device; and

in response to a trigger condition indicating that the communication session between the second application and the first application is to be migrated to or shared with a third application on a third node in the network, transmitting one or more requests to an underlying access network node to migrate a first underlying network connection between the device and the second node to a second underlying network connection between the device and the third node.

The method of claim 11 , wherein the first node is configured to share service layer session schedule information with the underlying access network node, wherein the underlying access network node is configured to use the service layer session schedule information to migrate the first underlying access network connection between the device and the second node to the second underlying network connection between the device and the third node.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the service layer session schedule information includes times when the service layer session is active/in-active.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the service layer session schedule information further includes a session migration schedule.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate tear-down and/or retiring of underlying access network connections no longer required by a session participant.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate an update of underlying access network connections with new information regarding a session participant for which a service layer session has been migrated to or shared with.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the new information is related to a location of the session participant.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first node is configured to coordinate an establishment of new underlying access network connections to support a new session participant for which a service layer session has been migrated to or shared with.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first node is configured to store context information associated with the service layer session, the context information including at least information concerning underlying access network connections.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the first node is configured to send update of the context information to the second node, wherein the second node is configured to update, based on receiving an indication that the context information stored at the first node has been updated, context information stored at the second node.
