Abstract

Polymer catheters and guidewires for use in intravascular surgery, and more particularly polymer catheters and guidewires micro-machined with a micro-cutting machine to provide sufficient flexibility to travel through a patient's vasculature while retaining sufficient torquability to transmit torque from a proximal end to the distal end of the catheter or guidewire, and methods of producing the same.

Claims (50)

1. An intravascular device, comprising:

an elongated member having a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein the distal portion includes

an outer surface,

an inner surface, and

a plurality of fenestrations formed therein, the fenestrations having a depth extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, and the fenestrations defining a plurality of radially extending rings and axially extending beams; and

an elastomeric filling material encapsulating the distal portion and filling the full depth of the fenestrations between the outer surface and the inner surface of the elongated member.

2. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein an outer diameter of the distal portion of the elongated member is larger than an outer diameter of the proximal portion of the elongated member.

3. The intravascular device of claim 2 , wherein a length of the distal portion is up to 20% of a full length of the intravascular device.

4. The intravascular device of claim 1 , further comprising an inner member disposed within at least a portion of a lumen of the elongated member.

5. The intravascular device of claim 4 , wherein the inner member has a substantially constant diameter along its length.

6. The intravascular device of claim 4 , wherein the inner member decreases in diameter from a proximal end toward a distal end.

7. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein a lumen of the elongated member increases in diameter at the distal portion relative to the proximal portion.

8. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein a lumen of the elongated member has a continuous diameter.

9. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric filling material provides fluid integrity in the elongated member.

10. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion and distal portion are formed from different materials.

11. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the fenestrations are arranged in a rotating pattern along a longitudinal axis of the elongated member.

The intravascular device of claim 11 , wherein the fenestrations of the rotating pattern are arranged along the longitudinal axis of the elongated member so that each beam or set of beams is rotated relative to an adjacent beam or set of beams by a selected offset within a range of about 5 degrees to about 95 degrees.

13. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member is formed of a polymer.

14. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member has a modulus of about 3700 MPa to about 138 GPa.

15. The intravascular device of claim 4 , wherein the inner member is formed of stainless steel.

16. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated member is formed of nitinol.

17. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein a ratio of a modulus of the elongated member to a modulus of the elastomeric filling material is 7.4 to 370.

18. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the elastomeric filling material extends beyond a distal end of the elongated member to form a hollow distal tip.

19. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the intravascular device is a guidewire.

20. The intravascular device of claim 1 , wherein the intravascular device is a catheter.

21. An intravascular device, comprising:

an elongated member having a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein at least the distal portion has a modulus of about 3700 MPa to about 138 GPa and includes

an outer surface,

an inner surface, and

a plurality of fenestrations formed therein, the fenestrations having a depth extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, and the fenestrations defining a plurality of radially extending rings and axially extending beams,

wherein at least a portion of the fenestrations are arranged in a rotating pattern along a longitudinal axis of the elongated member; and

an elastomeric filling material encapsulating the distal portion and filling the full depth of the fenestrations between the outer surface and the inner surface of the elongated member.

22. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein the intravascular device is a guidewire.

23. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein the intravascular device is a catheter.

24. The intravascular device of claim 21 , further comprising an inner member disposed within at least a portion of a lumen of the elongated member.

25. The intravascular device of claim 24 , wherein the inner member decreases in diameter from a proximal end toward a distal end.

26. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein a lumen of the elongated member has a continuous diameter.

27. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein the elongated member is formed of a polymer or of nitinol.

28. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein a ratio of a modulus of the elongated member to a modulus of the elastomeric filling material is 7.4 to 370.

29. The intravascular device of claim 21 , wherein the elastomeric filling material extends beyond a distal end of the elongated member to form a hollow distal tip.

30. An intravascular device, comprising:

an elongated member having a proximal portion and a distal portion each formed from a different material, wherein the distal portion comprises nitinol and includes

an outer surface,

an inner surface, and

a plurality of fenestrations formed therein, the fenestrations having a depth extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, and the fenestrations defining a plurality of radially extending rings and axially extending beams,

wherein at least a portion of the fenestrations are arranged in a rotating pattern along a longitudinal axis of the elongated member, and

wherein the fenestrations of the rotating pattern are arranged along the longitudinal axis of the elongated member so that each beam or set of beams is rotated relative to an adjacent beam or set of beams by a selected angular offset within a range of about 5 degrees to about 95 degrees; and

a stainless steel inner member disposed within at least a portion of a lumen of the elongated member.

31. The intravascular device of claim 30 , wherein the inner member decreases in diameter from a proximal end toward a distal end.

32. The intravascular device of claim 30 , wherein a lumen of the elongated member has a continuous diameter.
