Abstract

Coupled inductor signal transfer systems are disclosed in which transmitter and receiver coils are inductively coupled in a configuration for wirelessly transferring power and/or data signals. In preferred implementations, the systems may be used for transmitting both power and data. Preferred embodiments of the invention have at least one multi-tap coil on the primary side and/or secondary side of the system. The selection of taps enables the effective size and/or number of coils to be dynamically changed according to operational needs.

21 . A system comprising:

primary side circuitry configured to process a startup signal and to select a bias level in response to the startup signal to generate a signal having a predetermined frequency and amplitude;

secondary side circuitry configured to receive the signal having the predetermined frequency and amplitude and to generate a secondary side feedback signal in response;

a primary side driver configured to receive the secondary side feedback signal and to reconfigure a tap setting to modify power and data transfer characteristics between the primary side circuitry and the secondary side circuitry.

22 . The system of claim 21 further comprising a primary side coil having more than two taps.

23 . The system of claim 21 further comprising a secondary side coil having more than two taps.

24 . The system of claim 21 further comprising feedback circuitry configured to determine a resonant frequency of a primary side and to operate the primary side driver at the resonant frequency.

25 . The system of claim 21 wherein the primary side driver further comprises frequency adjustment circuitry.

26 . The system of claim 21 wherein the primary side driver further comprises switching circuitry operably coupled to a primary side coil.

27 . The system of claim 21 wherein the secondary side circuitry further comprises switching circuitry operably coupled to a secondary side coil.

28 . The system of claim 21 wherein the secondary side circuitry further comprises a plurality of capacitors operably coupled to a secondary side coil.

29 . A system comprising:

a primary side having a plurality of taps selectably coupled to a driver, and a circuit configured to determine a tap setting that corresponds to a predetermined data and power transfer rate;

a secondary side having a secondary side coil operably coupled to receiver circuitry;

whereby a data signal and a power signal is transmitted by the primary side and received by the secondary side; and

wherein the primary side is configured to select an initial bias and to adjust the initial bias in response to a feedback signal from the secondary side.

30 . The system of claim 29 wherein the primary side driver further comprises frequency adjustment circuitry.

31 . The system of claim 29 wherein the primary side driver further comprises amplitude level adjustment circuitry.

32 . The system of claim 29 wherein the primary side driver further comprises load level adjustment circuitry.

33 . The system of claim 29 wherein the primary side is adapted to modify the power signal.

34 . The system of claim 33 wherein the power signal is modulated for transmission to include the data signal.

35 . The system of claim 29 wherein the power signal is modulated for transmission to include the data signal.

36 . The system of claim 29 wherein the secondary side coil comprises more than two taps.

37 . The system of claim 29 further comprising feedback circuitry adapted to determine a resonant frequency of the primary side and to operate the driver at the resonant frequency.

38 . The system of claim 29 wherein the primary side driver further comprises switching circuitry operably coupled to a primary side coil.

39 . The system of claim 29 wherein the secondary side receiver further comprises switching circuitry operably coupled to the secondary side coil.

40 . The system of claim 29 wherein the secondary side receiver further comprises a plurality of capacitors operably coupled to the secondary side coil.
