Abstract

A wearable biometric monitoring device includes a physiological sensor configured to detect and/or measure physiological information from a subject wearing the device, an accelerometer, and a processor. The processor is configured to analyze signals from the accelerometer to identify a 1G force vector on the biometric monitoring device, and determine whether an orientation of the 1G force vector is aligned with a desired vector for the 1G force. The device may also include a transmitter, and the processor is configured to communicate information, via the transmitter, to the subject that the device is being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1G force vector is aligned with the desired vector for the 1G force and to communicate information to the subject that the device is not being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1G force vector is not aligned with the desired vector for the 1G force.

Claims (31)

1. A method of determining if a wearable biometric monitoring device is being worn correctly on a body of a subject, wherein the biometric monitoring device includes a physiological sensor, an accelerometer, at least one processor, and an actuator, the method comprising the following performed via the at least one processor:

analyzing signals from the accelerometer to identify a 1 G force vector on the biometric monitoring device;

determining whether an orientation of the 1 G force vector is aligned with a desired vector for the 1 G force; and

automatically adjusting the biometric monitoring device relative to the body via the actuator in response to determining that the orientation of the 1 G force vector is not aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating information to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1 G force vector is aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating information to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is not being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1 G force vector is not aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein communicating information to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is not being worn correctly further comprises communicating instructions to the subject to adjust the biometric monitoring device relative to the body.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein communicating information to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is being worn correctly comprises sending an audio and/or visual communication to a remote device in communication with the biometric monitoring device.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein communicating information to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is not being worn correctly comprises sending an audio and/or visual communication to a remote device in communication with the biometric monitoring device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physiological sensor comprises a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor configured to detect and/or measure heart rate information from the subject.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biometric monitoring device is an earbud, an earpiece, or a headset.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biometric monitoring device is a hearing aid.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biometric monitoring device comprises a band configured to at least partially encircle a portion of the body.

11. A wearable biometric monitoring device configured to be worn by a subject, the device comprising:

a physiological sensor configured to detect and/or measure physiological information from the subject;

an accelerometer;

an actuator; and

at least one processor configured to:

analyze signals from the accelerometer to identify a 1 G force vector on the biometric monitoring device;

determine whether an orientation of the 1 G force vector is aligned with a desired vector for the 1 G force; and

adjust the biometric monitoring device relative to the body via the actuator in response to determining that the orientation of the 1 G force vector is not aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

12. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , further comprising a transmitter, and wherein the at least one processor is configured to communicate information, via the transmitter, to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1 G force vector is aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

13. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , further comprising a transmitter, and wherein the at least one processor is configured to communicate information, via the transmitter, to the subject that the biometric monitoring device is not being worn correctly if the orientation of the 1 G force vector is not aligned with the desired vector for the 1 G force.

14. The biometric monitoring device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to communicate instructions to the subject to adjust the biometric monitoring device relative to the body.

15. The biometric monitoring device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to send an audio and/or visual communication that the biometric monitoring device is being worn correctly to a remote device in communication with the biometric monitoring device via the transmitter.

16. The biometric monitoring device of claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to send an audio and/or visual communication that the biometric monitoring device is not being worn correctly to a remote device in communication with the biometric monitoring device via the transmitter.

17. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein the physiological sensor comprises a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor configured to detect and/or measure heart rate information from the subject.

18. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein the biometric monitoring device is an earbud, an earpiece, or a headset.

19. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein the biometric monitoring device is a hearing aid.

20. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein the biometric monitoring device comprises a band configured to at least partially encircle a portion of the body.

21. The biometric monitoring device of claim 11 , wherein the biometric monitoring device is integrated within a wrist strap, a wrist watch, an ankle bracelet, a headband, an armband, a patch, or clothing.
