Abstract

An electronic device includes a first switch configured to connect a first sideband use (SBU) terminal of a Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) controller to a first SBU terminal of a USB-C receptacle. The electronic device also includes a second switch configured to connect a second sideband use (SBU) terminal of the USB-C controller to a second SBU terminal of the USB-C receptacle. The electronic device further includes a voltage protection circuit configured to deactivate one or more of the first switch and the second switch when a voltage exceeding a predetermined threshold is detected. The voltage protection circuit includes a first set of diodes coupled to the first SBU terminal of the USB-C controller and a second set of diodes coupled to the second SBU terminal of the USB-C controller.

Claims (37)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

a first switch configured to connect a first configuration channel (CC) terminal of a Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) controller to a first CC terminal of a USB-C receptacle;

a second switch configured to connect a second CC terminal of the USB-C controller to a second CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle; and

a voltage protection circuit configured to deactivate one or more of the first switch and the second switch when a voltage exceeding a predetermined threshold is detected, wherein the voltage protection circuit comprises:

a first set of rectifying elements coupled to the first CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle; and

a second set of rectifying elements coupled to the second CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the voltage protection circuit is coupled to a voltage source configured to provide a gate voltage to a gate of the first switch and a gate of the second switch.

3. The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the first switch and the second switch are activated when the voltage source provides the gate voltage to the gate of the first switch and the gate of the second switch.

4. The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the first switch and the second switch are deactivated when the gate voltage is not provided to the gate of the first switch and the gate of the second switch.

5. The electronic device of claim 2 , wherein the voltage protection circuit further comprises:

a third switch coupled to the first set of rectifying elements and the second set of rectifying elements, wherein the third switch is configured to be activated when the voltage exceeds the predetermined threshold.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the first switch comprises a first drain-extended field effect transistor and the first set of rectifying elements includes diodes.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the second switch comprises a second drain-extended field effect transistor and the second set of rectifying elements includes diodes.

8. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold is based on one or more of the first set of rectifying elements.

9. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold is based on one or more of the second set of rectifying elements.

10. A system, comprising:

a Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) connector;

a first switch configured to connect a first configuration channel (CC) terminal of a Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) controller to a first CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle;

a second switch configured to connect a second CC terminal of the USB-C controller to a second CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle; and

a voltage protection circuit configured to deactivate one or more of the first switch and the second switch when a voltage exceeding a predetermined threshold is detected, wherein the voltage protection circuit comprises;

a first set of rectifying elements coupled to the first CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle; and

a second set of rectifying elements coupled to the second CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the voltage protection circuit is coupled to a voltage source configured to provide a gate voltage to a gate of the first switch and a gate of the second switch.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first switch and the second switch are activated when the voltage source provides the gate voltage to the gate of the first switch and the gate of the second switch.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first switch and the second switch are deactivated when the gate voltage is not provided to the gate of the first switch and the gate of the second switch.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the voltage protection circuit further comprises:

a third switch coupled to the first set of rectifying elements and the second set of rectifying elements, wherein the third switch is configured to activate when the voltage exceeds the predetermined threshold, wherein the first and second sets of rectifying elements include diodes.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first switch comprises a first drain-extended field effect transistor.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second switch comprises a second drain-extended field effect transistor.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined threshold is based on one or more of the first set of rectifying elements or the second set of rectifying elements.

18. A method, comprising:

receiving a first voltage via a first switch coupled to a first configuration channel (CC) terminal of a Universal Serial Bus Type-C (USB-C) controller and a first CC terminal of a USB-C receptacle;

receiving a second voltage via second switch coupled to a second CC terminal of the USB-C controller and a second CC terminal of the USB-C receptacle;

detecting that the first voltage or the second voltage exceeds a threshold voltage; and

turning off, in response to the first or second voltages exceeding the threshold voltage, the first switch and the second switch.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising detecting the first voltage by using a first set of rectifying elements, wherein the first set of rectifying elements includes diodes.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising detecting the second voltage by using a second set of rectifying elements, wherein the second set of rectifying elements includes diodes.
