Abstract

Methods and systems for mitigating the impact of beamforming on the accuracy of Wi-Fi based location tracking of client devices. An embodiment takes the form of a process that includes (a) obtaining a plurality of received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values respectively associated with frames in a plurality of frames that were (i) received by various access points in a plurality of access points and (ii) transmitted by a client device that is connected to a first access point in the plurality of access points; (b) segmenting the access points in the plurality of access points into (i) a beamforming-path set of one or more access points and (ii) a non-beamforming-path set of one or more access points; (c) identifying a location-determination subset of the obtained RSSI values; and (d) determining a location of the client device using the identified location-determination subset of the obtained RSSI values.

Claims (63)

1. A method, comprising:

obtaining a plurality of signal strength indicator (SSI) values associated with a plurality of frames (i) received by a plurality of access points and (ii) transmitted by a device in communication with the plurality of access points,

wherein the plurality of access points comprise

a first type of access points configured to receive a first subset of the plurality of frames transmitted by the device via a non-beamformed signal, and

a second type of access points configured to receive a second subset of the plurality of frames transmitted by the device via a beamformed signal;

identifying a first subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the first subset of the plurality of frames;

identifying a second subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the second subset of the plurality of frames;

identifying a first frame of the first subset of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via the non-beamformed signal;

identifying a first SSI value of the first subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the first frame;

segmenting the first frame into a first group of frames such that the first group of frames includes one or more first group SSI values including the first SSI value; and

determining a location of the device based on the one or more first group SSI values.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a second frame of the second subset of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via the beamformed signal;

identifying a second SSI value of the second subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the second frame; and

segmenting the second frame into a second group of frames different from the first group of frames such that the second group of frames includes one or more second group SSI values including the second SSI value,

wherein the determining the location of the device is not based on the one or more second group SSI values.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

identifying a third frame of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via the beamformed signal or the non-beamformed signal;

identifying a third SSI value of the plurality of SSI values associated with the third frame as being within a predetermined SSI range from the second SSI value; and

segmenting the third frame into the second group of frames such that the one or more second group SSI values include the third SSI value.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the third frame is transmitted by the device as the non-beamformed signal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the identifying of the third frame as the non-beamformed signal is based on one of a timing and a content of the third frame.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the third frame is a sound frame.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

identifying the third frame as being transmitted by the device as the beamformed signal.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein the predetermined SSI range is 5 dB.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second SSI value is 20 dB.

10. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

identifying a third frame of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via an omnidirectional signal; and

identifying a third SSI value of the plurality of SSI values associated with the third frame,

wherein the location of the device is further based on the third SSI value.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the identifying of the third frame is based on at least one of a timing and a content of the third frame.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third frame comprises a sounding frame.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the device is a beamformed-capable device,

wherein the obtaining of the plurality of SSI values is in response to determining that the device is the beamformed-capable device.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the device is in communication with the plurality of access points,

wherein the obtaining of the plurality of SSI values is in response to determining that the device is in communication with the plurality of access points.

15. The method of claim 1 , the obtaining comprising:

receiving at least one of the plurality of SSI values via a communication interface.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more of a second frame and a third frame of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via the non-beamformed signal;

identifying at least one of a second SSI value and a third SSI value of the plurality of SSI values associated with the second frame and the third frame, respectively, based on the identified one or more of the second frame and the third frame; and

segmenting one or more of the second frame and the third frame into the first group of frames such that the one or more first group SSI values further includes the at least one of the second SSI value and the third SSI value.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising

identifying the second frame and the third frame of the plurality of frames.

18. The method of claim 2 , the identifying of the first SSI value further comprising:

measuring the first SSI value using a peripheral associated with a first access point.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the peripheral is a sensor.

20. A system, comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

obtain a plurality of signal strength indicator (SSI) values associated with a plurality of frames (i) received by a plurality of access points and (ii) transmitted by a device in communication with the plurality of access points,

wherein the plurality of access points comprise

a first type of access points configured to receive a first subset of the plurality of frames transmitted by the device via a non-beamformed signal, and

a second type of access points configured to receive a second subset of the plurality of frames transmitted by the device via a beamformed signal;

identify a first subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the first subset of the plurality of frames;

identify a second subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the second subset of the plurality of frames;

identify a first frame of the first subset of the plurality of frames as being transmitted by the device via the non-beamformed signal;

identify a first SSI value of the first subset of the plurality of SSI values associated with the first frame;

group the first frame into a first group of frames such that the first group of frames includes one or more first group SSI values including the first SSI value; and
