Abstract

A system suitable for collecting and transporting urine away from the body of a person or animal may include an assembly having a fluid impermeable casing having a fluid reservoir at a first end, a fluid outlet at a second end, and a longitudinally extending fluid impermeable layer coupled to the fluid reservoir and the fluid outlet and defining a longitudinally elongated opening between the reservoir and the outlet. The assembly can further include a fluid permeable support disposed within the casing with a portion extending across the elongated opening, and a fluid permeable membrane disposed on the support and covering at least the portion of the support that extends across the elongated opening, so that the membrane is supported on the support and disposed across the elongated opening. The assembly can further include a tube having a first end disposed in the reservoir and a second, fluid discharge end.

Claims (21)

1. A method comprising: positioning a urine collecting apparatus adjacent to a urethral opening of a user, the urine collecting apparatus including: a fluid impermeable layer extending between a first end and a second end, the fluid impermeable layer at least partially defining a fluid outlet and at least one opening between the first end and the second end, the fluid impermeable layer including a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface, wherein at least substantially all of the top surface extending from the first end contacts at least one of a vaginal region, perineum, or anal region of the user after positioning the urine collecting apparatus, the top surface extending from the first end exhibiting a convex curvature extending around a longitudinal axis of the fluid impermeable barrier, wherein the convex curvature is relative to an exterior of the of the urine collecting apparatus; a fluid permeable support that is generally cylindrical and disposed within the fluid impermeable layer; a fluid permeable membrane extending around a circumference of the fluid permeable support, the fluid permeable membrane covering the portion of the fluid permeable support that extends across the at least one elongated opening, wherein positioning the urine collecting apparatus adjacent to a urethral opening of a user includes positioning the portion of the fluid permeable membrane extending across the at least one elongated opening against or near the urethral opening of the user; and at least one tube extending through the fluid outlet; receiving urine from the urethral opening through the at least one opening and through the fluid permeable support into the fluid permeable support; and removing the urine from within the fluid impermeable layer via the at least one tube.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning the urine collecting apparatus adjacent to the urethral opening of the user includes positioned the urine collecting apparatus adjacent to the urethral opening of a female user.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the urine collecting apparatus adjacent to the urethral opening of the user includes bending the urine collecting apparatus to conform the urine collecting apparatus to the user.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

receiving urine from the urethral opening includes receiving urine from the urethral opening through the at least one opening, through the fluid permeable membrane, through the fluid permeable support, and into a fluid reservoir.

The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the urine from the fluid reservoir via the at least one tube includes applying suction from a vacuum source that is in fluid communication with the at least one tube that is sufficient to remove at least substantially all of the urine from the fluid reservoir.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fluidly coupling the at least one tube to a fluid receptacle.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising fluidly coupling the fluid receptacle to a vacuum source.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after removing the urine from the fluid reservoir:

removing the urine collecting apparatus from the urethral opening of the user; and

positioning an additional urine collecting apparatus adjacent to the urethral opening of the user.

9. A urine collecting apparatus, comprising: a fluid impermeable layer extending between a first end and a second end, the fluid impermeable layer at least partially defining a fluid reservoir at a distal tip of the first end, a fluid outlet, and at least one opening between the first end and the second end, the at least one opening configured to be positioned adjacent to a urethral opening of a user, the fluid impermeable layer including a top surface and a bottom surface opposite the top surface, wherein at least substantially all of the top surface extending from the first end is configured to contact at least one of vaginal region, perineum, or anal region of the user after positioning the urine collecting apparatus; a fluid permeable support that is generally cylindrical and disposed within the fluid impermeable layer; and a fluid permeable membrane extending around a circumference of the fluid permeable support, the fluid permeable membrane covering the portion of the fluid permeable support that extends across the at least one elongated opening to maintain the fluid permeable membrane against or near the urethral opening of the user during use.

10. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid impermeable layer exhibits a generally cylindrical shape.

11. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the fluid impermeable layer is curved.

12. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid permeable support includes a spine, the spine dividing an inner volume of the permeable support into at least a first channel and a second channel.

13. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid permeable support includes porous spun plastic.

14. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid permeable support includes polypropylene, nylon, or polyester.

15. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid permeable support defines a tunnel extending completely therethrough.

16. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fluid permeable membrane includes gauze or ribbed knitted fabric.

17. The urine collecting apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising at least one tube extending through the fluid outlet and in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid impermeable layer exhibits a generally cylindrical shape.
