Abstract

An ultracapacitor that includes an energy storage cell immersed in an advanced electrolyte system and disposed within a hermetically sealed housing, the cell electrically coupled to a positive contact and a negative contact, wherein the ultracapacitor is configured to output electrical energy within a temperature range between about −40 degrees Celsius to about 210 degrees Celsius. Methods of fabrication and use are provided.

Claims (20)

1. An ultracapacitor comprising:

an energy storage cell and an electrolyte composition within a sealed housing, the cell electrically coupled to a positive contact and a negative contact, wherein the ultracapacitor is configured to operate at temperatures throughout an operational temperature range without significant changes in performance or durability, and wherein:

the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 210 degrees Celsius; and

the electrolyte composition comprises a mixture of an ionic liquid and an organic solvent, wherein the ionic liquid contains at least one of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium, N-Propyl-N-methylpiperidinium as a cation with at least one of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate, and tetracyanoborate as an anion, and wherein the electrolyte composition comprises an additive ionic salt comprising at least one of spiro-(1 1′)-bipyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate and triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate.

2. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 150 degrees Celsius.

3. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 125 degrees Celsius.

4. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: ethyl isopropyl sulfone, ethyl isobutyl sulfone, ethyl methyl sulfone, methyl isopropyl sulfone, isopropyl isobutyl sulfone, isopropyl s-butyl sulfone, butyl isobutyl sulfone, or bimethyl sulfone, and linear sulfones.

5. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: polypropylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate.

6. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the organic solvent comprises at least one of acetonitrile, butyronitrile, propionitrile, and glutaronitrile.

7. An energy storage device comprising:

an energy storage cell and an electrolyte composition within a sealed housing, the cell electrically coupled to a positive contact and a negative contact, wherein the energy storage device is configured to operate at temperatures throughout an operational temperature range without significant changes in performance or durability, and wherein:

the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 210 degrees Celsius; and the electrolyte composition comprises a mixture of a first ionic liquid and a second ionic liquid different from the first ionic liquid, wherein the first ionic liquid contains at least one of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, N-butyl-N-methylpiperidinium, N-Propyl-N-methylpiperidinium as a cation with at least one of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate, and tetracyanoborate as an anion; and wherein the electrolyte composition comprises an additive ionic salt comprising at least one of spiro-(1 1′)-bipyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate and triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate.

8. The energy storage device of claim 7 , wherein the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 150 degrees Celsius.

9. The energy storage device of claim 7 , wherein the operational temperature range comprises about −40 degrees Celsius to about 125 degrees Celsius.

10. The energy storage device of claim 7 , wherein the electrolyte composition comprises an organic solvent.

11. The energy storage device of claim 10 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: ethyl isopropyl sulfone, ethyl isobutyl sulfone, ethyl methyl sulfone, methyl isopropyl sulfone, isopropyl isobutyl sulfone, isopropyl s-butyl sulfone, butyl isobutyl sulfone, bimethyl sulfone, and linear sulfones.

12. The energy storage device of claim 10 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of: polypropylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate.

13. The energy storage device of claim 10 , wherein the organic solvent comprises at least one of acetonitrile, butyronitrile, propionitrile or glutaronitrile.

14. The energy storage device of claim 7 , wherein a concentration of the additive ionic salt is in a range of about 0.1M to 0.75M.

15. The energy storage device of claim 7 , comprising one of an ultracapacitor and a battery.
