Abstract

Examples of the present disclosure can include a method. The method may include (1) identifying, by a virtual infrastructure manager (“VIM”), a virtual network function (“VNF”) descriptor from information obtained from the integrated network, (2) selectively generating at least one container on the physical network based on the VNF descriptor, (3) determining, by the VIM, an integrated network requirement based on state information associated with the integrated network, (4) providing, by the VIM, to a container management platform, the integrated network requirement, and (5) causing a VNF to be generated in the container to fulfill the integrated network requirement. Corresponding systems, non-transitory computer-readable media, and methods are also disclosed.

Claims (42)

1. A system for managing an integrated network comprising a physical network and a virtual network, comprising:

a non-transitory, computer-readable medium containing instructions; and

a processor that executes the instructions to perform stages comprising:

identifying, by a virtual infrastructure manager (“VIM”), a virtual network function (“VNF”) descriptor from information obtained from the integrated network;

selectively generating at least one container based on the VNF descriptor;

determining, by the VIM, an integrated network requirement based on state information associated with the integrated network;

providing, by the VIM, to a container management platform, the integrated network requirement; and

generating a multi-part VNF that includes first and second VNFs, wherein the first VNF includes at least one microservice generated in the container to fulfill the integrated network requirement, and wherein the second VNF includes a virtual machine (“VM”) that is not in the container.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the the stages further:

second VNF comprising the VM is generated on the multi-part VNF based on the VNF descriptor to fulfill the integrated network requirement.

3. The system of claim 1 , the stages further comprising generating, by the container management platform, the at least one microservice based on an occurrence of a predetermined event defined by the VNF descriptor.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein generating the multi-part VNF includes determining at least one of a VNF placement, an addition of other VNFs, and a VNF teardown.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the VIM comprises an application programming interface (“API”) configured to receive an integrated network service request, and wherein the stages further comprise determining, by the VIM, the integrated network requirement based on the integrated network service request.

6. The system of claim 1 , the stages further comprising identifying and storing, by the VIM, data describing at least one of a VNF location on the integrated network or a VNF resource consumption on the integrated network.

7. The system of claim 1 , the stages further comprising implementing, by the VIM, a policy defined by the VNF descriptor, the VNF descriptor comprising at least one of a virtual VNF link descriptor (“VVLD”), a virtual network function descriptor (“VNFD”), or a physical network function descriptor (“PNFD”).

8. A method for managing an integrated network comprising a physical network and a virtual network, comprising:

identifying, by a VIM, a VNF descriptor from information obtained from the integrated network;

selectively generating at least one container on the physical network based on the VNF descriptor;

determining, by the VIM, an integrated network requirement based on state information associated with the integrated network;

providing, by the VIM, to a container management platform, the integrated network requirement; and

generating a multi-part VNF that includes first and second VNFs, wherein the first VNF includes at least one microservice generated in the container to fulfill the integrated network requirement, and wherein the second VNF includes a virtual machine (“VM”) that is not in the container.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the further:

second VNF comprising the VM is generated on the multi-part VNF based on the VNF descriptor to fulfill the integrated network requirement.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising generating, by the container management platform, the at least one microservice based on an occurrence of a predetermined event defined by the VNF descriptor.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein generating the multi-part VNF includes determining at least one of a VNF placement, an addition of other VNFs, and a VNF teardown.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the VIM comprises an API configured to receive an integrated network service request, and wherein the stages further comprise determining, by the VIM, the integrated network requirement based on the integrated network service request.

13. The method of claim 8 , the method further comprising identifying and storing, by the VIM, data describing at least one of a VNF location on the integrated network or a VNF resource consumption on the integrated network.

14. The method of claim 8 , the method further comprising implementing, by the VIM, a policy defined by the VNF descriptor, the VNF descriptor comprising at least one of a VVLD, a VNFD, or a PNFD.

15. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, perform stages for managing an integrated network comprising a physical network and a virtual network, the stages comprising:

a non-transitory, computer-readable medium containing instructions; and

a processor that executes the instructions to perform stages comprising:

identifying, by a VIM, a VNF descriptor from information obtained from the integrated network;

selectively generating at least one container on the physical network based on the VNF descriptor;

determining, by the VIM, an integrated network requirement based on state information associated with the integrated network;

providing, by the VIM, to a container management platform, the integrated network requirement; and

generating a multi-part VNF that includes first and second VNFs, wherein the first VNF includes at least one microservice generated in the container to fulfill the integrated network requirement, and wherein the second VNF includes a virtual machine (“VM”) that is not in the container.

16. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the:

second VNF comprising the VM is generated on the multi-part VNF based on the VNF descriptor to fulfill the integrated network requirement.

17. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , the stages further comprising generating, by the container management platform, the at least one microservice based on an occurrence of a predetermined event defined by the VNF descriptor.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the generating the multi-part VNF includes determining at least one of a VNF placement, an addition of other VNFs, and a VNF teardown.

19. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the VIM comprises an API configured to receive an integrated network service request, and wherein the stages further comprise determining, by the VIM, the integrated network requirement based on the integrated network service request.

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , the stages further comprising identifying and storing, by the VIM, data describing at least one of a VNF location on the integrated network or a VNF resource consumption on the integrated network.
