Abstract

A retainer system for use with staple cartridges configured for use with a surgical stapling device is disclosed. The retainer comprises a retainer body that is configured to be attached to the staple cartridge by retention features. The system includes a tool that moves the retention features between a first state wherein the retention features prevent the retainer from being attached to the staple cartridge to a second state where the retainer may be coupled to the staple cartridge by the retention features.

Claims (25)

1. A retainer system for use with staple cartridges configured for use with a surgical stapling device comprising a lockout for preventing operation of the surgical stapling device, wherein said retainer system comprises:

a retainer, comprising:

a retainer body configured to be mounted to a staple cartridge to form a cartridge assembly, wherein said cartridge assembly is configured to be seated in the surgical stapling device, and wherein said retainer body comprises an authentication key configured to defeat the lockout when said cartridge assembly is seated in the surgical stapling device; and

at least one retention tab protruding from said retainer body and biased into a first state, wherein said at least one retention tab is unable to couple said retainer body to the staple cartridge when said at least one retention tab is in said first state, and wherein said retainer system further comprises:

a retainer tool configured to move each said at least one retention tab from said first state to a second state when said retainer tool is brought into operable engagement therewith, wherein each said at least one retention tab is moved into retaining engagement with a portion of the staple cartridge to removably affix said retainer body to the staple cartridge when said at least one retention tab is in said second state and said retainer tool is disengaged from said at least one retention tab.

2. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one retention tab is configured to be inserted into a slot in the staple cartridge when said at least one retention tab is said second state, and wherein when said at least one retention tab is biased into said first state, said at least one retention tab is unable to be inserted into the slot unless said retainer tool is operably engaged therewith.

3. The retainer system of claim 2 , wherein said at least one retention tab comprises at least one pair of retention tabs, and wherein each said pair of retention tabs comprises:

a first retention tab protruding from a bottom surface of said retainer body and comprising a first catch feature, wherein said first retention tab is biased in a first angled direction to said first state such that said first catch feature is unable to be inserted into the slot; and

a second retention tab protruding from said bottom surface of said retainer body and comprising a second catch feature, wherein said second retention tab is biased in a second angled direction that differs from said first angled direction to said first state such that said second catch feature is unable to be inserted into the slot, and wherein said retainer tool is configured to move said first retention tab and said second retention tab into said second state for insertion into the slot and when said retainer tool is disengaged from said first and second retention tabs, said first and second catch features retainingly engage the staple cartridge to couple said retainer body to the staple cartridge.

4. The retainer system of claim 3 , wherein said cartridge assembly is configured to be seated in a frame of the surgical stapling device, and wherein said first and second catch features are configured to be disengaged from the staple cartridge by the frame when said cartridge assembly is seated therein.

5. The retainer system of claim 3 , wherein said retainer body comprises:

a first opening corresponding to said first retention tab; and

a second opening corresponding to said second retention tab, wherein said retainer tool comprises:

a first straightening arm insertable through said first opening to move said first retention tab from said first state to said second state; and

a second straightening arm insertable through said second opening to move said second retention tab from said first state to said second state.

6. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein said retainer tool is configured to be removably supported on the staple cartridge between said retainer body and the staple cartridge.

7. The retainer system of claim 6 , wherein said retainer tool comprises:

a tool body sized to be removably received on a deck of the staple cartridge; and

an opening extending through said tool body, wherein said opening is aligned with a slot in the staple cartridge when said tool body is positioned on the deck, and wherein said opening is configured to move said at least one retention tab from said first state to said second state when said at least one retention tab is inserted through said opening in said tool body into the slot in the staple cartridge and thereafter permit the tool body to be slidably removed from the deck.

8. The retainer system of claim 7 , wherein said tool body is sized to protrude past at least one end of the staple cartridge when said tool body is supported on the deck.

9. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein said retainer body is sized relative to a deck of the staple cartridge such that when said retainer body is removably coupled to the staple cartridge, the retainer body covers staple pockets that open through the deck.

10. The retainer system of claim 1 , wherein said retainer body comprises a proximal end and wherein said authentication key protrudes from said proximal end.

11. The retainer system of claim 10 , wherein said authentication key comprises a plurality of cam surfaces.

12. The retainer system of claim 11 , wherein a first cam surface is proximal to a second cam surface.

13. The retainer system of claim 12 , wherein said first cam surface is positioned above said second cam surface.
