Insertable deactivator element for surgical stapler lockouts
A surgical stapling assembly that comprises a stapling device is disclosed. The stapling device includes an authentication lockout that is movable between a locked position wherein the stapling device is inoperable and an unlocked position wherein the stapling device is operable. The assembly further includes a deactivator tool that includes a deactivation key that is configured to move the authentication lockout into the unlocked position prior to seating a staple cartridge into the device.
1. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
a surgical stapling device, comprising:
a first jaw;
a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position; and
a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position during a staple firing stroke; and
an authentication lockout movable between a locked position in which said authentication lockout prevents operation of said surgical stapling device and an unlocked position in which said surgical stapling device is operable, and wherein said surgical stapling assembly further comprises:
a staple cartridge operably seated within one of said first jaw and said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises an authentication key configured to move said authentication lockout from the locked position to the unlocked position; and
a deactivator tool, comprising:
a tool body configured to removably mate with a portion of said surgical stapling device in a deactivation position; and
a deactivation key configured to move said authentication lockout into the unlocked position prior to operably seating said staple cartridge in said one of said first jaw and said second jaw of said surgical stapling device.
2. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said tool body is configured to removably mate with one of said first jaw and said second jaw.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge-supporting frame, and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil that is movably supported relative to said cartridge-supporting frame for movement relative to said cartridge-supporting frame between the open position and the closed position.
4. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 3 , wherein said tool body is configured to removably mate with said anvil.
5. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 4 , wherein said tool body comprises a passage configured to slidably receive a portion of said anvil therethrough.
6. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , further comprising means for retaining said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said means for retaining comprises a deactivator insert separate and apart from said staple cartridge, and wherein said deactivator insert is configured to be removably placed in a deactivation position within one of said first jaw and said second jaw to retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
8. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said means for retaining comprises adhesive tape configured to engage a portion of said authentication lockout and one of said first jaw and said second jaw to retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
9. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said means for retaining comprises a magnet configured to magnetically retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
10. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said authentication lockout prevents said firing member from moving distally from the starting position unless said authentication lockout is in the unlocked position.
11. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 1 , wherein said authentication lockout prevents said second jaw from moving from the open position to the closed position unless said authentication lockout is in the unlocked position.
12. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
a surgical stapling device, comprising:
a first jaw;
a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;
a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position during a staple firing stroke; and
an authentication lockout movable between a locked position wherein said authentication lockout prevents operation of said surgical stapling device and an unlocked position wherein said surgical stapling device is operable, and wherein said surgical stapling assembly further comprises:
a staple cartridge operably seated within one of said first jaw and said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises an authentication key configured to move said authentication lockout from the locked position to the unlocked position; and
a deactivator insert configured to be inserted into said surgical stapling device to retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position prior to seating the staple cartridge into said one of said first jaw and said second jaw.

The surgical stapling assembly of claim 12 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge-supporting frame, wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil movable relative to said cartridge-supporting frame between the open position and the closed position, and wherein said deactivator insert is configured to be inserted into said cartridge-supporting frame.
14. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 12 , wherein said authentication lockout is configured to prevent said second jaw from moving from the open position to the closed position.
15. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 14 , wherein said authentication lockout comprises a lockout arm that is pivotally movable between the locked position wherein said lockout arm prevents said second jaw from being movable from the open position to the closed position and the unlocked position wherein said second jaw is movable from the open position to the closed position, and wherein said deactivator insert is configured to retain said lockout arm in the unlocked position.
16. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 15 , wherein said first jaw comprises a cartridge-supporting frame, wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil movable relative to said cartridge-supporting frame between the open position and the closed position, and wherein said deactivator insert is configured to be inserted into said cartridge-supporting frame.
17. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 16 , wherein said lockout arm comprises a retention tab configured to be received within an opening in said cartridge-supporting frame when said lockout arm is in the unlocked position, and wherein said deactivator insert is configured to be inserted between said retention tab and an edge of said opening in said cartridge-supporting frame to retain said lockout arm in the unlocked position.
18. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
a surgical stapling device, comprising:
a first jaw;
a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position; and
a firing member movable between a starting position and an ending position during a staple firing stroke;
an authentication lockout movable between a locked position wherein said authentication lockout prevents operation of said surgical stapling device and an unlocked position wherein said surgical stapling device is operable; and
a staple cartridge operably seated within one of said first jaw and said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises an authentication key configured to move said authentication lockout from the locked position to the unlocked position, and wherein said surgical stapling assembly further comprises means for retaining said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
19. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 18 , wherein said means for retaining comprises an insert configured to be supported in one of said first jaw and said second jaw to retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
20. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 18 , wherein said means for retaining comprises a magnetic tool removably attachable to one of said first jaw and said second jaw to magnetically retain said authentication lockout in the unlocked position.
