Abstract

A staple cartridge comprising a deformable authentication key that is movable between a first state and a second state is disclosed. The authentication key is configured to operably engage a lockout of a surgical stapling device when the staple cartridge is inserted into the surgical stapling device in an initial insertion position. When the cartridge is seated in a final position within the device, the authentication key is deformed from the first state to the second state and moves the lockout from a locked position to an unlocked position.

Claims (15)

1. A staple cartridge configured for use in a surgical stapling device comprising a cartridge-supporting jaw, an axially moving firing member and a lockout movable relative to the axially moving firing member between a locked position wherein the lockout blocks axial movement of the axially moving firing member and an unlocked position, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

an elongate cartridge body defining a proximal end and a distal end, wherein said elongate cartridge body comprises a plurality of surgical staples operably stored therein and is configured to be removably seated in the cartridge-supporting jaw; and

a deformable authentication key extending proximally beyond said proximal end of said elongate cartridge body, wherein said deformable authentication key is configured to operably engage the lockout when said staple cartridge is inserted into the cartridge-supporting jaw in an initial insertion position and said deformable authentication key is in a first state, and wherein said deformable authentication key comprises an authentication ramp coupled to said elongate cartridge body by a deformable tab configured to facilitate deformation of said deformable authentication key when said staple cartridge is longitudinally moved from the initial insertion position to a final insertion position within the cartridge-supporting jaw to prevent reuse of said staple cartridge, and wherein said authentication ramp comprises:

a ramp tip comprising:

a first angled cam surface; and

a second cam surface, wherein said first angled cam surface operably engages the lockout as said deformable authentication key is moved from the first state to a second state and biases the lockout laterally toward the unlocked position.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein after said first angled cam surface operably engages the lockout, continued movement of said staple cartridge into the final insertion position causes said second cam surface to move the lockout into the unlocked position.

3. A staple cartridge configured for use in a surgical stapling device comprising a cartridge-supporting jaw, an axially moving firing member and a lockout laterally movable relative to the axially moving firing member between a locked position wherein the lockout blocks axial movement of the axially moving firing member and an unlocked position, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

an elongate cartridge body defining a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end, and wherein said elongate cartridge body comprises a plurality of surgical staples operably stored therein and is configured to be removably seated in the cartridge-supporting jaw; and

a deformable authentication key extending proximally beyond said proximal end of said elongate cartridge body, wherein said deformable authentication key is movably coupled to said elongate cartridge body such that said deformable authentication key is bendable between a first state and a second state, wherein said deformable authentication key operably engages the lockout when said staple cartridge is inserted into the cartridge-supporting jaw in an initial insertion position and said deformable authentication key is in the first state, wherein said deformable authentication key comprises an authentication ramp configured to operably engage the lockout, wherein said authentication ramp is coupled to said elongate cartridge body by a bendable hinge, and wherein said authentication ramp comprises:

a ramp tip configured to engage the lockout when said staple cartridge is in said initial insertion position;

a first angled cam surface extending from said ramp tip; and

a second cam surface, wherein said first angled cam surface operably engages a portion of the lockout as said deformable authentication key is moved from the first state to the second state and biases the lockout laterally toward said unlocked position.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 3 , wherein said deformable authentication key rotates between the first state and the second state.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 3 , wherein the axially moving firing member is movable between a starting position and an ending position during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said deformable authentication key is positioned in a path of the axially moving firing member when said staple cartridge is in said initial insertion position and said deformable authentication key is in the first state.
