Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for evaluating whether to execute a scene change request. In response to receiving a scene change request prior to an output of an upcoming scene in a media asset, a media player client compares a first scene sequence preceding the upcoming scene with a second scene sequence in a previously accessed media asset (the second scene sequence preceding a scene at which the user previously made a scene change request). In response to determining that the respective scene sequences correspond to each other, the media player client determines whether the culminating scenes correspond and executes the scene change request accordingly.

Claims (75)

1. A method for evaluating whether to execute a scene change request, the method comprising:

receiving, during an output of a first media asset, a scene change request prior to a first scene of the first media asset;

in response to receiving the scene change request, determining a first sequence of scenes preceding the first scene;

identifying a second media asset in a viewing history;

identifying, in the second media asset, a second scene at which a request for a scene change was received;

determining a second sequence of scenes preceding the second scene;

in response to determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes, comparing the first scene with the second scene;

determining, based on the comparing, that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene; and

in response to determining that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene, generating for display a warning that the scene change at the second scene is not recommended.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scene change request is a fast-forwarding request, further comprising:

determining, for the fast-forwarding request, a number of frames skipped in a period of time;

modifying the fast-forwarding request by reducing the number of frames skipped in the period of time; and

executing the modified fast-forwarding request.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating for display a warning that a scene change at the first scene is not recommended.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first media asset is being output on a first device, and wherein generating for display the warning comprises:

selecting, from a plurality of devices listed in a user profile, a second device different from the first device; and

generating for display the warning on the second device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes comprises:

determining, based on metadata of the first media asset, a first plurality of categories for the first sequence of scenes, wherein each scene of the first sequence of scenes is assigned a respective category from the first plurality of categories;

determining, based on metadata of the second media asset, a second plurality of categories for the second sequence of scenes, wherein each scene of the second sequence of scenes is assigned a respective category from the second plurality of categories;

comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories; and

determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories comprises:

determining whether a majority of categories in the second plurality of categories match the first plurality of categories; and

in response to determining that the majority of categories in the second plurality of categories match the first plurality of categories, determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories comprises:

determining whether an order of categories in the second plurality of categories matches an order of categories in the first plurality of categories; and

in response to determining that the order of categories in the second plurality of categories matches the order of categories in the first plurality of categories, determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining, based on the comparing, that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene comprises:

determining, based on metadata of the first media asset, a first category for the first scene;

determining, based on metadata of the second media asset, a second category for the second scene;

comparing the first category with the second category; and

determining that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene based on comparing the first category with the second category.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving, from a user profile, a sequence size value indicative of a number of scenes to include in each of the first sequence of scenes and the second sequence of scenes.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the comparing, that the first scene corresponds to the second scene; and

in response to determining that the first scene corresponds to the second scene, executing the scene change request.

11. A system for evaluating whether to execute a scene change request, the system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive, during an output of a first media asset, a scene change request prior to a first scene of the first media asset;

in response to receiving the scene change request, determine a first sequence of scenes preceding the first scene;

identify a second media asset in a viewing history;

identify, in the second media asset, a second scene at which a request for a scene change was received;

determine a second sequence of scenes preceding the second scene;

in response to determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes, compare the first scene with the second scene;

determine, based on the comparing, that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene; and

in response to determining that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene, generate for display a warning that the scene change at the second scene is not recommended.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the scene change request is a fast-forwarding request, wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine, for the fast-forwarding request, a number of frames skipped in a period of time;

modify the fast-forwarding request by reducing the number of frames skipped in the period of time; and

execute the modified fast-forwarding request.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to generate for display a warning that a scene change at the first scene is not recommended.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first media asset is being output on a first device, and wherein the control circuitry is further configured to generate for display the warning by:

selecting, from a plurality of devices listed in a user profile, a second device different from the first device; and

generating for display the warning on the second device.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes by:

determining, based on metadata of the first media asset, a first plurality of categories for the first sequence of scenes, wherein each scene of the first sequence of scenes is assigned a respective category from the first plurality of categories;

determining, based on metadata of the second media asset, a second plurality of categories for the second sequence of scenes, wherein each scene of the second sequence of scenes is assigned a respective category from the second plurality of categories;

comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories; and

determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories by:

determining whether a majority of categories in the second plurality of categories match the first plurality of categories; and

in response to determining that the majority of categories in the second plurality of categories match the first plurality of categories, determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes based on comparing the first plurality of categories with the second plurality of categories by:

determining whether an order of categories in the second plurality of categories matches an order of categories in the first plurality of categories; and

in response to determining that the order of categories in the second plurality of categories matches the order of categories in the first plurality of categories, determining that the second sequence of scenes corresponds to the first sequence of scenes.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine, based on the comparing, that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene by:

determining, based on metadata of the first media asset, a first category for the first scene;

determining, based on metadata of the second media asset, a second category for the second scene;

comparing the first category with the second category; and

determining that the first scene does not correspond to the second scene based on comparing the first category with the second category.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to retrieve, from a user profile, a sequence size value indicative of a number of scenes to include in each of the first sequence of scenes and the second sequence of scenes.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine, based on the comparing, that the first scene corresponds to the second scene; and

in response to determining that the first scene corresponds to the second scene, execute the scene change request.
