Abstract

A gaming machine comprises a symbol selector for selecting a plurality of symbols from a set of symbols for display during play of a base game, the set of symbols including a plurality of non-configurable symbols and a plurality of configurable symbols; a random number generator for generating random prize values; a value assigner for assigning a generated random prize value to each selected configurable symbol; and an outcome evaluator for monitoring play of the base game, wherein a feature game is triggered in response to a trigger event, the trigger event comprising a predefined number of the plurality of configurable symbols being selected by the symbol selector for display. During the feature game, the symbol selector is further configured to 1) hold the selected configurable symbols that comprise the trigger event on the display; 2) remove at least one of the selected non-configurable symbols from the display; and 3) replace any removed non-configurable symbol with another symbol selected from the set of symbols.

2. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the at least one feature symbol is a blank symbol.

3. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least randomly select, from a set of values including a plurality of progressive awards, the value displayed on each of the at least one configurable symbol.

4. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least provide the feature game with a quantity of rounds.

5. The gaming machine of claim 4 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least select and display, for each remaining round of the quantity of rounds, additional replacement symbols for each of the plurality of feature game symbol display positions not displaying the at least one configurable symbol.

6. The gaming machine of claim 4 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least end the feature game after the quantity of rounds are played.

7. The gaming machine of claim 4 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least decrement the quantity of rounds by a decrement quantity upon completion of a round of the quantity of rounds and increment the quantity of rounds by an increment quantity upon a condition of another round of the quantity of rounds.

8. A method of operating a gaming machine, the method comprising:

initiating play of a base game in response to receiving an input via a player input device of the gaming machine;

for the play of the base game:

selecting a plurality of symbols from a plurality of non-configurable symbols and at least one configurable symbol that is configured to display an award value; and

displaying the plurality of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions on a display device of the gaming machine;

initiating a feature game in response to a predetermined number of the at least one configurable symbol being displayed in a base game outcome; and

for the play of the feature game:

retaining each of the at least one configurable symbol from the base game outcome at a corresponding feature game symbol display position of a plurality of feature game symbol display positions;

for each of the plurality of feature game symbol display positions displaying a non-configurable symbol of the plurality of non-configurable symbols:

selecting at least one replacement symbol from the at least one configurable symbol and at least one feature symbol; and

displaying the at least one replacement symbol at respective feature game symbol display positions; and

determining a feature game award based, at least in part, on the award values displayed by each of the at least one configurable symbol in a feature game outcome.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the selecting the at least one replacement symbol comprises selecting from a blank symbol of the at least one feature symbol.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining the feature game award comprises summing the award values displayed on each of the at least one configurable symbol of the feature game outcome.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising randomly selecting, for each of the at least one configurable symbol selected for the at least one replacement symbol, an award value from a set of numeric values.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising randomly selecting, for each of the at least one configurable symbol selected for the at least one replacement symbol, an award value from a set of numeric values and a set of textual indicia for a plurality of progressive awards.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising awarding at least a quantity of rounds for the feature game.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, for each remaining round of the quantity of rounds:

selecting additional replacement symbols for each of the plurality of feature game symbol display positions displaying the at least one feature symbol; and

displaying the additional replacement symbols at respective feature game symbol display positions.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising ending the feature game after playing the quantity of rounds.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

decrementing the quantity of rounds by a decrement quantity in response to completing a round of the quantity of rounds;

incrementing the quantity of rounds by an increment quantity in response to a condition of another round of the quantity of rounds; and

ending the feature game in response to the quantity of rounds having a predetermined relationship to a predetermined threshold value.

17. A gaming machine, comprising:

a display device;

a player input device;

a memory device; and

a processor executing instructions stored on the memory device, which cause the processor to at least:

initiate a feature game in response to a base game outcome comprising a predetermined number of at least one configurable symbol;

for an initial round of a quantity of rounds for the feature game:

retain each of the at least one configurable symbol from the base game outcome at a corresponding feature game symbol display position of a plurality of feature game symbol display positions;

for each of the plurality of feature game symbol display positions not displaying the at least one configurable symbol, randomly determine whether the respective feature game symbol display position is to display the at least one configurable symbol; and

after the quantity of rounds, determine a feature game award based, at least in part, on award values displayed by the at least one configurable symbol in a feature game outcome.

18. The gaming machine of claim 17 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least randomly select the award value, displayed on each of the at least one configurable symbol, from a set of award values including a plurality of progressive awards.

19. The gaming machine of claim 17 , wherein, for each remaining round of the quantity of rounds, the instructions further cause the processor to randomly determine, for each of the plurality of feature game symbol display positions not displaying the at least one configurable symbol, whether the respective feature game symbol display position is to display the at least one configurable symbol.

20. The gaming machine of claim 17 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to at least end the feature game after the quantity of rounds are played.
