Abstract

One variation of a method for detecting a fire includes: during a first time period: detecting an increase in ambient light intensity and detecting an increase in ambient humidity; responsive to the increase in ambient light intensity and the increase in ambient humidity, detecting a fire event; during a second time period: correlating a decrease in ambient light intensity with an increase in visual obscuration; detecting an increase in ambient air temperature; in response to a magnitude of the increase in visual obscuration remaining below a high obscuration threshold and a magnitude of the increase in ambient temperature remaining below a high temperature threshold, classifying the fire as an incipient fire; and, in response to the magnitude of the increase in visual obscuration exceeding the high obscuration threshold and the magnitude of the increase in ambient temperature exceeding the high temperature threshold, classifying the fire as a developed fire.

Claims (27)

1. A method for detecting a fire, comprising:

between a first time and a second time:

detecting a first change in a first fire indicator signal at a first sensor; and

detecting a second change in a second fire indicator signal at a second sensor;

in response to the first change in the first fire indicator signal exceeding a first threshold change and the second change in the second fire indicator signal exceeding a second threshold change:

interpreting the first change in the first fire indicator signal and the second change in the second fire indicator signal as a fire event; and

transmitting a fire alarm to an emergency responder, the fire alarm comprising a first protective equipment specification; and

at a third time succeeding the second time, detecting a third change in the first fire indicator signal; and

in response to incompatibility between the first protective equipment specification and the third change in the first fire indicator signal, transmitting a second protective equipment specification to the emergency responder.

2. The method of claim 1 :

wherein detecting the third change in the first fire indicator signal comprises detecting an increase in ambient temperature, exceeding a threshold ambient temperature, via a temperature sensor; and

wherein transmitting the second protective equipment specification to the emergency responder comprises transmitting a specification for additional heat protection equipment to the emergency responder.

3. The method of claim 1 :

wherein detecting the third change in the first fire indicator signal comprises detecting an hazardous composition of gaseous combustion products via a gas sensor; and

wherein transmitting the second protective equipment specification to the emergency responder comprises transmitting a specification for personal protective equipment corresponding to the hazardous composition of gaseous combustion products.

4. The method of claim 1 :

wherein detecting the second change in the second fire indicator signal comprises detecting an increase in ambient temperature via a temperature sensor;

wherein detecting the third change in the first fire indicator signal comprises detecting a decrease in ambient light intensity below a threshold ambient light intensity via a light sensor; and

wherein transmitting the second protective equipment specification to the emergency responder comprises transmitting a specification for a secondary oxygen supply.

5. The method of claim 1 :

further comprising:

in response to interpreting the first change in the first fire indicator signal and the second change in the second fire indicator signal as the fire event, calculating a first risk level for the fire event based on a first value of the first fire indicator signal at the second time and a second value of the second fire indicator signal at the second time;

at the third time, detecting a fourth change in the second fire indicator signal;

calculating a second risk level for the fire event at the third time based on the third change in the first fire indicator signal and the fourth change in the second fire indicator signal; and

wherein transmitting the second protective equipment specification to the emergency responder comprises, in response to the second risk level exceeding the first risk level by a threshold change in risk level:

reporting the second risk level to the emergency responder; and

transmitting the second protective equipment specification, corresponding to the second risk level, to the emergency responder.
