Abstract

Accommodating intraocular lenses and methods of use. The accommodating intraocular lenses include peripheral regions that are adapted to be more responsive to certain types of forces than to other types of forces. For example, the accommodating intraocular lenses can include haptics that are stiffer in an anterior-to-posterior direction than in a radial direction.

Claims (28)

1. An accommodating intraocular lens, comprising:

an optic portion comprising an optic fluid chamber; and

a haptic having a proximal portion coupled to the optic portion and a free distal portion, the haptic comprising a haptic fluid lumen extending through the haptic and in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber,

wherein the haptic fluid lumen is defined in part by a haptic first wall and a haptic second wall facing the haptic first wall, wherein the haptic first wall is radially inward from the haptic second wall with respect to the optic portion when the haptic is coupled to the optic portion,

wherein a thickness of the haptic first wall is greater than a thickness of the haptic second wall in a radial direction, and

wherein a thickness difference between the thickness of the haptic first wall and the thickness of the haptic second wall in the radial direction decreases along a segment of the haptic in between the free distal portion and the proximal portion.

2. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 1 , further comprising a second haptic comprising a second proximal portion coupled to the optic portion and a second free distal portion, the second haptic comprising a second haptic fluid lumen extending through the second haptic in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber,

wherein the second haptic fluid lumen is defined in part by a second haptic first wall and a second haptic second wall facing the second haptic first wall, wherein the second haptic first wall is radially inward from the second haptic second wall with respect to the optic portion when the second haptic is coupled to the optic portion, and

wherein a thickness of the second haptic first wall is greater than a thickness of the second haptic second wall in a radial direction.

3. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 2 , wherein a second thickness difference between the thickness of the second haptic first wall and the thickness of the second haptic second wall in the radial direction decreases along a segment of the second haptic in between the second free distal portion and the second proximal portion.

4. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional profile of the haptic fluid lumen is D-shaped along a segment of the haptic.

5. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the haptic is made of a material configured to deform in response to forces on the haptic due to ciliary muscle movement when the haptic is deployed within a capsular bag of an eye, wherein deformation of the haptic moves a fluid from the haptic fluid lumen into the optic fluid chamber to change an optical parameter of the accommodating intraocular lens.

6. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 5 , wherein the walls of the haptic are configured to allow the haptic to deform more in response to forces in the radial direction than it is to forces in the anterior-to-posterior direction.

7. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 5 , wherein the walls of the haptic are configured such that a greater volume of fluid moves between the haptic fluid lumen and the optic fluid chamber in response to forces on the haptic in the radial direction than in response to forces on the haptic in the anterior-to-posterior direction.

8. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the haptic first wall is about three times the thickness of the haptic second wall.

9. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the haptic first wall is about two times the thickness of the haptic second wall.

10. An accommodating intraocular lens, comprising:

an optic portion comprising an anterior element, a posterior element, and an optic fluid chamber disposed partially in between the anterior element and the posterior element,

wherein the optic portion has an optical axis extending in an anteroposterior direction at a center point of the optic portion, and

wherein a thickness of the anterior element decreases radially outward from a region of the anterior element at the optical axis to a peripheral region of the anterior element, wherein the thickness of the posterior element increases radially from an edge of a central region to a peripheral edge of the posterior element; and

a haptic coupled to the optic portion, wherein the haptic comprises a haptic fluid lumen extending through the haptic, wherein the haptic fluid lumen is in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber.

11. An accommodating intraocular lens, comprising:

an optic portion comprising an anterior element, a posterior element, and an optic fluid chamber disposed partially in between the anterior element and the posterior element,

wherein the optic portion has an optical axis extending in an anteroposterior direction at a center point of the optic portion, and

wherein a thickness of the posterior element decreases radially outward from a region of the posterior element at the optical axis to a central region radially outward from the optical axis, wherein the thickness of the posterior element increases radially from an edge of the central region to a peripheral edge of the posterior element; and

a haptic coupled to the optic portion, wherein the haptic comprises a haptic fluid lumen extending through the haptic, wherein the haptic fluid lumen is in fluid communication with the optic fluid chamber.

12. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 10 , wherein the optic portion further comprises a buttress portion extending radially from the optic portion, wherein the buttress portion fits at least partially into an opening defined along the haptic when the haptic is coupled to the optic portion.

13. The accommodating intraocular lens of claim 10 , wherein the haptic fluid lumen is defined in part by a haptic first wall and a haptic second wall facing the haptic first wall, wherein the haptic first wall is radially inward from the haptic second wall with respect to the optic portion when the haptic is coupled to the optic portion, and wherein a thickness of the haptic first wall is greater than a thickness of the haptic second wall in a radial direction.
