Abstract

A LED controller for an LED pixel array includes an image frame buffer to receive image data and a standby image buffer connected to the image frame buffer to hold a standby image. A command and control module connected is configured to substitute the standby image in the standby image buffer for the image in the image frame buffer when image data is unavailable.

Claims (30)

1. A LED controller for an LED pixel array, the LED controller comprising:

a drive module configured to drive the LED pixel array;

an image frame buffer configured to receive image data;

a standby image buffer connected in series with the image frame buffer to the drive module, the standby image buffer configured to hold a standby image; and

a command and control module connected to both the image frame buffer and the standby image buffer, the command and control module configured to direct the standby image in the standby image buffer to the image frame buffer in response to determining that the image data is unavailable.

2. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the command and control module is configured to determine that the image data is unavailable due to error in received image data.

3. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the command and control module is configured to determine that the image data is unavailable due to failure to timely receive the image data in the image frame buffer.

4. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the image frame buffer is configured to receive the image data from a vehicle.

5. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein standby image data held in the standby image buffer is provided at least in part by a vehicle.

6. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein standby image data held in the standby image buffer is provided at least in part by the LED controller.

7. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the image frame buffer can refresh held images at 30 Hz or greater speed.

8. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the image frame buffer can refresh held images at 60 Hz or greater speed.

9. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein images in the image frame buffer can be partially refreshed.

10. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein images in the image frame buffer can be differentially refreshed.

11. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein images in the image frame buffer can be modified by the command and control module.

12. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the command and control module is configured to direct the standby image in the standby image buffer to the image frame buffer by issuing a buffer swap command to swap the standby image into the image frame buffer.

13. The LED controller for an LED pixel array of claim 1 , wherein the command and control module is configured to direct the standby image in the standby image buffer to the image frame buffer after a stored image in the image frame buffer has been repeated a threshold number of times.

14. A vehicle headlamp system, comprising:

a vehicle supported power and control system comprising a data bus;

a headlamp module having a light emitting diode (LED) controller with a connected LED pixel array;

a drive module configured to drive the LED pixel array;

an image frame buffer in the LED controller, the image frame buffer configured to receive image data;

a standby image buffer in the LED controller, the standby image buffer connected in series with the image frame buffer to the drive module and configured to hold a standby image; and

a command and control module in the LED controller, the command and control module configured to direct the standby image in the standby image buffer to the image frame buffer in response to determining that the image data is unavailable.

15. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein the command and control module is configured to determine that the image data is unavailable due to error in received image data.

16. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein the command and control module is configured to determine that the image data is unavailable due to failure to timely receive the image data in the image frame buffer.

17. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein the image frame buffer is configured to receive the image data from a vehicle.

18. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein standby image data held in the standby image buffer is provided at least in part by a vehicle.

19. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein standby image data held in the standby image buffer is provided at least in part by the LED controller.

20. The vehicle headlamp system of claim 14 , wherein the command and control module is configured to direct the standby image in the standby image buffer to the image frame buffer by issuing a buffer swap command to swap the standby image into the image frame buffer.
