Abstract

A system in one embodiment comprises a first endpoint device. The first endpoint device comprises at least one processor that is coupled to memory. The first endpoint device is configured to communicate with a second endpoint device over a network using a given communication protocol. The at least one processor is configured to monitor a communication session under the given communication protocol between the first endpoint device and the second endpoint device and to determine that a designated network condition has occurred based at least in part on the monitoring of the communication session. The at least one processor is further configured to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred and to generate performance data associated with the communication session utilizing the activated performance monitoring component.

Claims (51)

1. A system comprising:

a first endpoint device, the first endpoint device comprising at least one processor coupled to memory, the first endpoint device being configured to communicate with a second endpoint device over a network using a given communication protocol, the at least one processor being configured:

to monitor a communication session under the given communication protocol between the first endpoint device and the second endpoint device;

to determine that a designated network condition has occurred based at least in part on the monitoring of the communication session;

to determine whether or not an indication of consent to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device has been received;

to present a consent request to a user of the first endpoint device based at least in part on a determination that the indication of consent has not been received and the determination that the designated network condition has occurred:

to receive a response from the user of the first endpoint device in response to the consent request, the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component;

to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred and the receipt of the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component; and

to generate performance data associated with the communication session utilizing the activated performance monitoring component.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is configured to automatically activate the performance monitoring component based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the consent request comprises an indication of whether the designated network condition is a current network condition or a prior network condition of the network.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is configured to present the consent request prior to the determination that the designated network condition has occurred.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the response comprises an indication of a duration for how long the consent to activate the performance monitoring component is approved by the user.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is further configured:

to receive a removal of consent from the user of the first endpoint device; and

to deactivate the performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the receipt of the removal of consent.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is further configured to take an automated action based at least in part on the generated performance data.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is further configured:

to determine that the designated network condition has been resolved based at least in part on the generated performance data; and

to deactivate the performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has been resolved.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the given communication protocol is an IPv6 communication protocol and the performance monitoring component comprises at least one of the flow label of the IPv6 communication protocol and an extension header of the IPv6 communication protocol.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the extension header comprises the destination options extension header and the monitoring component comprises the performance and diagnostic metrics destination option of the IPv6 communication protocol.

11. A method comprising:

monitoring a communication session under a given communication protocol between a first endpoint device and a second endpoint device;

determining that a designated network condition has occurred based at least in part on the monitoring of the communication session;

determining whether or not an indication of consent to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device has been received:

presenting a consent request to a user of the first endpoint device based at least in part on a determination that the indication of consent has not been received and the determination that the designated network condition has occurred:

receiving a response from the user of the first endpoint device in response to the consent request the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component;

activating a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred and the receipt of the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component; and

generating performance data for the communication session utilizing the activated performance monitoring component;

wherein the method is performed by at least one processor of the first endpoint device.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the at least one processor is configured to automatically activate the performance monitoring component based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

receiving a removal of consent from the user of the first endpoint device; and

disabling the performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the receipt of the removal of consent.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the consent request comprises an indication of whether the designated network condition is a current network condition or a prior network condition of the network.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the response comprises an indication of a duration for how long the consent to activate the performance monitoring component is approved by the user.

16. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by at least one processor of a first endpoint device, the first endpoint device comprising at least one processor coupled to memory, the first endpoint device being configured to communicate with a second endpoint device over a network using a given communication protocol, causes the at least one processor:

to monitor a communication session under the given communication protocol between the first endpoint device and the second endpoint device;

to determine that a designated network condition has occurred based at least in part on the monitoring of the communication session;

to determine whether or not an indication of consent to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device has been received;

to present a consent request to a user of the first endpoint device based at least in part on a determination that the indication of consent has not been received and the determination that the designated network condition has occurred;

to receive a response from the user of the first endpoint device in response to the consent request the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component;

to activate a performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred and the receipt of the response comprising the indication of consent to activate the performance monitoring component; and

to generate performance data for the communication session utilizing the activated performance monitoring component.

17. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the at least one processor is configured to automatically activate the performance monitoring component based at least in part on the determination that the designated network condition has occurred.

18. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the program code further causes the at least one processor:

to receive a removal of consent from the user of the first endpoint device; and

to deactivate the performance monitoring component of the given communication protocol for the first endpoint device based at least in part on the receipt of the removal of consent.

19. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the consent request comprises an indication of whether the designated network condition is a current network condition or a prior network condition of the network.

20. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the response comprises an indication of a duration for how long the consent to activate the performance monitoring component is approved by the user.
