Abstract

Methods and devices for treating nasal airways are provided. Such devices and methods may improve airflow through an internal and/or external nasal valve, and comprise the use of mechanical re-shaping, energy application and other treatments to modify the shape, structure, and/or air flow characteristics of an internal nasal valve, an external nasal valve or other nasal airways.

Claims (20)

1. A method for deactivating tissue in a nasal airway in a patient without forming a surgical incision or using an implant, the method comprising:

inserting a cryotherapy balloon of a nasal airway treatment device through a nostril of the patient in an uninflated configuration;

inflating the cryotherapy balloon to contact the cryotherapy balloon with nasal mucosa lining the nasal airway;

removing energy from submucosal tissue underlying the nasal mucosa by maintaining the cryotherapy balloon in an inflated configuration to cool and thus deactivate the submucosal tissue underlying the nasal mucosa;

deflating the cryotherapy balloon; and

removing the cryotherapy balloon from the nasal airway.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the energy comprises ablating the submucosal tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing energy from the submucosal tissue comprises circulating a substance through the cryotherapy balloon.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the substance is selected from the group consisting of liquids and gases.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the submucosal tissue underlying the nasal mucosa comprises muscle tissue.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein deactivating the submucosal tissue underlying the nasal mucosa paralyzes or otherwise prevents normal contraction of the muscle tissue.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the patient has rhinitis before performing the method.

8. A method of deactivating tissue in a nasal airway of a patient without forming a surgical incision or using an implant, the method comprising:

inserting a cryotherapy balloon of a nasal airway treatment device through a nostril of the patient in an uninflated configuration;

inflating the cryotherapy balloon by circulating a substance into an interior of the cryotherapy balloon to contact the cryotherapy balloon with nasal mucosa lining the nasal airway; and

delivering a cryotherapy treatment to the tissue at a selected tissue depth beneath the nasal mucosa by maintaining the cryotherapy balloon in an inflated configuration and continuing to circulate the substance through the interior of the cryotherapy balloon to deactivate the tissue.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the tissue at the selected tissue depth beneath the nasal mucosa comprises muscle.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein delivering the cryotherapy treatment comprises ablating the tissue.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the substance is selected from the group consisting of liquids and gases.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining that the patient has rhinitis before performing the method.
