Abstract

Systems and methods of repositioning teeth, using one or more appliances for installing on a patient's teeth are described. The appliance includes an arch shaped member; a plurality of spring members coupled to or provided on the arch shaped member; and a plurality of securing members for securing to a corresponding plurality of the patient's teeth on a one-to-one basis, the securing members being supported by the arch shaped member. The arch shaped member and the plurality of springs, together, comprise a two dimensional structure having a length dimension and a width dimension with varying widths along the length dimension, that is bent into a three dimensional structure.

Claims (21)

1. An orthodontic appliance comprising:

an arch shaped member having a shape to extend along one side of a plurality of adjacent teeth of a patient, the arch shaped member having a first end, a second end, and an intermediate portion extending between the first and second ends;

a plurality of arms extending from the intermediate portion of the arch shaped member, at least one of the arms including a spring member, wherein the arch shaped member and at least some of the arms comprise a unitarily-formed structure; and

a plurality of caps for securing to a plurality of the patient's teeth, each of the caps being coupled to or provided on one or more of the arms, wherein each cap is configured to fit over and cover one or more of the patient's teeth.

2. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein each respective cap is separate from each other respective cap of the plurality of caps.

3. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein no more than a single one of the caps is attached to each arm.

4. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein a plurality of the caps is attached to one or more of the arms.

5. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein a plurality of the arms is attached to one or more of the caps.

6. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein each arm is associated with one or more different respective ones of the patient's teeth relative to each other arm of the plurality of arms.

7. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein the caps are configured to attach to the patient's teeth and avoid contact between caps on adjacent teeth.

8. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein the arch shaped member and the plurality of arms, together, comprise a two dimensional structure having a length dimension and a width dimension with varying widths along the length dimension, that is bent into a three dimensional structure.

9. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of spring members coupled to or provided on the arch shaped member.

10. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 9 , wherein the arch shaped member and the plurality of springs, together, comprise a two dimensional structure having a length dimension and a width dimension with varying widths along the length dimension, that is bent into a three dimensional structure.

11. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 9 , wherein each spring member is arranged along the arch shaped member at a location between two teeth in the jaw of the patient when the arch shaped member extends along the jaw of the patient.

12. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , wherein each spring member is provided along a different respective one of the arms relative to each other spring member.

13. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 1 , further comprising one or more spring members coupled to or provided on one or more of the arms, wherein the spring members are located between the arch shaped member and the caps and are coupled to or provided on the one or more arms.

14. An orthodontic appliance as recited in claim 13 , wherein each cap is arranged in a position separated from and not covering any portion of the spring member of the arm to which the cap is coupled to or provided on.

15. An orthodontic appliance comprising,

an arch shaped member having a shape to extend along one side of a plurality of adjacent teeth of a patient, the arch shaped member having a first end, a second end, and an intermediate portion extending between the first and second ends;

a plurality of arms extending from the intermediate portion of the arch shaped member, at least one of the arms including a spring member, wherein the arch shaped member and at least from of the arms comprise a unitarily-formed structure, and wherein, when the orthodontic appliance is positioned on the patient's teeth, each of the arms is oriented in an occlusogingival direction; and

a plurality of caps for securing to a plurality of the patient's teeth, each of the caps being coupled to or provided on one or more of the arms, wherein each cap is configured to fit over and cover one or more of the patient's teeth.
