Abstract

The present invention relates to a bacteriophage composition comprising one or more (suitably two or more, or three) bacteriophages selected from Sa87, J-Sa36, or Sa83, or mutants thereof. Also encompassed are the use of said bacteriophage compositions for medical or non-medical applications, as well as kits, bandages, and wound dressings comprising said bacteriophage compositions.

Claims (26)

1 . A bacteriophage composition comprising one or more bacteriophages selected from Sa87, J-Sa36, Sa83, and mutants thereof.

2 . A bacteriophage composition according to claim 1 comprising at least two bacteriophages selected from Sa87, J-Sa36, Sa83, or mutants thereof.

3 . A bacteriophage composition according to claim 1 or 2 , comprising bacteriophages Sa87, J-Sa36, Sa83, or mutants thereof.

4 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims consisting essentially of Sa87, J-Sa36, and Sa83, or mutants thereof.

5 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mutant has at least 75% sequence identity across its entire genome when compared to Sa87, J-Sa36, or Sa83.

6 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mutant has at least 80% sequence identity across its entire genome when compared to Sa87, J-Sa36, or Sa83.

7 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mutant has at least 90% sequence identity across its entire genome when compared to Sa87, J-Sa36, or Sa83.

8 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the mutant has at least 95% sequence identity across its entire genome when compared to Sa87, J-Sa36, or Sa83.

9 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims further comprising an antibiotic (e.g. a chemical antibiotic).

10 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, diluent, excipient or combinations thereof.

11 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims for use as a medicament.

12 . A bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims for use in treating a bacterial infection.

13 . Use of a bacteriophage composition according to any one of the preceding claims in the manufacture of a medicament for treating a bacterial infection.

14 . A method of treating a bacterial infection comprising administering the bacteriophage composition according to any one of claims 1 - 10 to a subject.

15 . A bacteriophage composition for use, use, or method according to any one of claims 11 - 14 , wherein the bacterial infection is a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infection.

16 . A bacteriophage composition for use, use, or method according to any one of claims 11 - 15 , wherein the bacterial infection is a pulmonary bacterial infection.

17 . A bacteriophage composition for use, use, or method according to any one of claims 11 - 16 , further comprising administering an antibiotic (e.g. a chemical antibiotic) to the subject.

18 . A kit comprising:

a. a bacteriophage composition according to any one of claims 1 - 10 ; and

b. instructions for use of same (e.g. in medicine).

19 . A kit according to claim 18 further comprising an antibiotic (e.g. a chemical antibiotic) and instructions for use of same in combination with the bacteriophage composition.

20 . A kit according to claim 18 or 19 , wherein said instructions are for use of same in treating a Staphylococcus aureus infection, preferably a Staphylococcus aureus pulmonary infection.

21 . A method of killing bacteria on a surface, said method comprising applying a bacteriophage composition according to any one of claims 1 - 10 to the surface.

22 . A method according to claim 21 , wherein the surface is the skin of a mammal, equipment (suitably medical equipment), bedding, furniture, walls, floors, or combinations thereof.

23 . Use of the bacteriophage composition according to any one of claims 1 - 10 or the kit according to any one of claims 18 - 20 for a non-medical application.

24 . A bandage or wound dressing comprising a bacteriophage composition according to any one of claims 1 - 10 .
