Abstract

In a multi-user multiple antenna system, a central processor is communicatively coupled to a plurality of geographically distributed access points via a network. The central processor selects two or more of the distributed access points to serve each of a plurality of user devices based on signal power of wireless links between each user device and the distributed access points. The central processor performs subspace processing on the signals transmitted and/or received across the plurality of distributed access points for producing a plurality of non-interfering spatial subchannels.

Claims (27)

1. A multi-user multiple antenna system, comprising:

a central processor;

the central processor communicatively coupled to a plurality of distributed access points via a network;

the central processor configured to select two or more of the plurality of distributed access points to serve each of a plurality of user devices based on signal power of wireless links between each user device and the plurality of distributed access points; and

the central processor employing subspace processing of signals transmitted and/or received across the plurality of distributed access points for producing a plurality of non-interfering spatial subchannels.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the central processor, the plurality of geographically distributed access points, or the plurality of client devices computes channel estimates of the wireless links between the geographically distributed access points and the client devices.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subspace processing comprises at least one of combining signals received by the plurality of geographically distributed access points, and transmitting signals from the plurality of geographically distributed access points to constructively combine at one or more client devices and produce nulls at one or more other client devices.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the central processor is configured to perform at least one of modulation, coding, synchronization, power control, and multiple-access control of signals transmitted by the plurality of geographically distributed access points.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of geographically distributed access points employs a local or global timing reference for transmitting and receiving signals.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of geographically distributed access points comprises one of a single antenna system or a multi-antenna system.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subspace processing comprises computing access-point weights based on a channel matrix.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of geographically distributed access points comprises at least one of a client device assigned to function as an access point, a base station in a mobile radio network, a router, or a relay.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network comprises at least one of a wireless network, an optical fiber network, and a wireline network.

10. A method implemented in a multi-user multiple antenna system configured to serve a plurality of client devices, comprising:

communicatively coupling a central processor to a plurality of geographically distributed access points via a network;

selecting two or more of the plurality of distributed access points to serve each of a plurality of user devices based on signal power of wireless links between each user device and the plurality of distributed access points; and

performing, by the central processor, subspace processing of signals transmitted and/or received across the plurality of distributed access points for producing a plurality of non-interfering spatial subchannels.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising performing time-division duplexing for transmitting and receiving signals.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising transmitting or receiving pilot signals or training signals by the plurality of geographically distributed access points.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the subspace processing comprises at least one of combining signals received by the plurality of geographically distributed access points, and transmitting signals from the plurality of geographically distributed access points to constructively combine at one or more client devices and produce nulls at one or more other client devices.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising performing at least one of modulation, coding, synchronization, power control, and multiple-access control of signals transmitted by the plurality of geographically distributed access points.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising employing a local or global timing reference for transmitting and receiving signals.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising performing local array processing of signals transmitted or received at each of the plurality of geographically distributed access points.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the subspace processing comprises computing channel estimates of the channel between the geographically distributed access points and the client devices, and computing access-point weights based on the channel estimates.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the access-point weights are computed based on the reciprocal of a channel matrix.

19. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of geographically distributed access points comprises at least one of a client device assigned to function as an access point, a base station in a mobile radio network, a router, or a relay.

20. The method of claim 10 , wherein the subspace processing comprises computing subcarrier weights to be applied to subcarriers of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal.
