Abstract

A surgical tool and control system therefor is provided. The surgical tool can include an instrument mount configured to engage with a robotic manipulator assembly, which can include a gear assembly configured to be actuated by the robotic manipulator assembly. The surgical tool can include an end effector coupled to the gear assembly, which is configured to be actuated by the gear assembly. The surgical tool can include a lockout configured to transition between a first state in which the lockout is physically engaged with the gear assembly to prevent a movement thereof and a second state in which the lockout is disengaged from the gear assembly. The surgical tool can include a control circuit configured to determine whether the end effector is in an energized state or a de-energized state and in the energized state, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

Claims (53)

1. A surgical tool comprising:

an instrument mount configured to engage with a robotic manipulator assembly, the instrument mount comprising a gear assembly, the gear assembly configured to be actuated by the robotic manipulator assembly;

an end effector coupled to the gear assembly, the end effector configured to be actuated by the gear assembly;

a lockout configured to transition between a first state in which the lockout is physically engaged with the gear assembly to prevent a movement thereof and a second state in which the lockout is disengaged from the gear assembly; and

a control circuit coupled to the lockout, the control circuit configured to:

determine whether the end effector is in an energized state or a de-energized state; and

in the energized state, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

2. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

communicably connect to a generator to which the surgical tool is connected; and

determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state according to whether the generator is delivering energy.

3. The surgical tool of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the generator is delivering the energy according to whether a switch coupled to the generator has been actuated.

4. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state by sensing whether energy is being delivered to the end effector.

5. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein, in the energized state, the control circuit is configured to cause the lockout to transition to the first state to prevent the movement of the gear assembly.

6. The surgical tool of claim 1 , further comprising:

a reciprocating member configured to move between a first position and a second position; and

a sensor configured to detect a position of the reciprocating member;

wherein the control circuit is coupled to the sensor and configured to:

determine whether the reciprocating member is at the second position according to a signal from the sensor; and

in the second position, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

7. A control system comprising:

an instrument mount configured to engage with a robotic manipulator assembly, the instrument mount comprising a gear assembly, the gear assembly configured to actuate an end effector of a surgical tool and be actuated by the robotic manipulator assembly;

a lockout configured to transition between a first state in which the lockout is physically engaged with the gear assembly to prevent a movement thereof and a second state in which the lockout is disengaged from the gear assembly; and

a control circuit coupled to the lockout, the control circuit configured to:

determine whether the end effector is in an energized state or a de-energized state; and

in the energized state, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

8. The control system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

communicably connect to a generator to which the surgical tool is connected; and

determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state according to whether the generator is delivering energy.

9. The control system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the generator is delivering the energy according to whether a switch coupled to the generator has been actuated.

10. The control system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state by sensing whether energy is being delivered to the end effector.

11. The control system of claim 7 , wherein, in the energized state, the control circuit is configured to cause the lockout to transition to the first state to prevent the movement of the gear assembly.

12. The control system of claim 7 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises a reciprocating member configured to move between a first position and a second position, the control system further comprising:

a sensor configured to detect a position of the reciprocating member;

wherein the control circuit is coupled to the sensor and configured to:

determine whether the reciprocating member is at the second position according to a signal from the sensor; and

in the second position, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

13. A control system comprising:

an instrument mount configured to engage with a robotic manipulator assembly, the instrument mount comprising a gear assembly, the gear assembly configured to actuate an end effector of a surgical tool and be actuated by the robotic manipulator assembly;

a lockout configured to transition between a first state in which the lockout is physically engaged with a shaft of the surgical tool to prevent a movement thereof and a second state in which the lockout is disengaged from the shaft; and

a control circuit coupled to the lockout, the control circuit configured to:

determine whether the end effector is in an energized state or a de-energized state; and

in the energized state, cause the lockout to transition between the first state and the second state.

14. The control system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

communicably connect to a generator to which the surgical tool is connected; and

determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state according to whether the generator is delivering energy.

15. The control system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the generator is delivering the energy according to whether a switch coupled to the generator has been actuated.

16. The control system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the end effector is in the energized state or the de-energized state by sensing whether energy is being delivered to the end effector.

17. The control system of claim 13 , wherein the shaft is operably coupled to the gear assembly, and wherein, in the energized state, the control circuit is configured to cause the lockout to transition to the first state to prevent the movement of the gear assembly.

18. The control system of claim 13 , wherein the surgical tool further comprises a reciprocating member configured to move between a first position and a second position, the control system further comprising:
