Abstract

Methods and systems are provided which project germicidal light from a lamp toward an individual donned in outerwear to disinfect the outerwear. In specific embodiments, germicidal light is projected toward an individual situated greater than approximately 1 foot from the light source. Some systems include sensor/s for detecting presence of an individual within a target area a set distance from the disinfection apparatus comprising the light source and program instructions for commencing operation of the disinfection apparatus based on information from the sensor/s. In addition or alternatively, some systems include reflective panel/s exhibiting greater than approximately 85% reflectance. In such cases, the systems may include program instructions for determining operating parameters of the disinfection apparatus and/or positions of the reflective panel/s based on information regarding an individual who is in the presence of the disinfection apparatus or who is scheduled to be in the presence of the disinfection apparatus.

Claims (25)

1. A system, comprising:

a disinfection apparatus comprising one or more germicidal light sources, wherein the disinfection apparatus is configured such that when the disinfection apparatus is arranged and operational in a room germicidal light generated from the one or more germicidal light sources is emitted to a region between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of the room;

a first sensor to detect occupancy within a room or area in which the disinfection apparatus is arranged;

a switch for activating and deactivating the first sensor;

a second sensor for detecting presence of an individual within a target area a set distance from the disinfection apparatus; and

a storage medium comprising program instructions which are executable by a processor for:

inhibiting and/or terminating operation of the one or more germicidal light sources upon the first sensor detecting occupancy; and

commencing operation of the disinfection apparatus to generate and project germicidal light exterior to the disinfection apparatus when the switch has deactivated the first sensor and upon the second sensor detecting presence of an individual in the target area.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions are further for terminating operation of the disinfection source upon the second sensor detecting the individual is absent the target area.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the disinfection apparatus is configured such that when the disinfection apparatus is arranged in a room germicidal light generated from the one or more germicidal light sources is emitted to a region extending at least approximately 7 feet from a floor of the room in the target area.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a weight sensor, a proximity sensor, a photo detection sensor or a motion sensor.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the disinfection apparatus is fixedly arranged in a room.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the disinfection apparatus comprises wheels to affect portability of the disinfection apparatus.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a remote user interface, wherein the program instructions are further for commencing operation of the disinfection apparatus to generate and project germicidal light exterior to the disinfection apparatus when the switch has activated the first sensor and upon receiving input from the remote user interface to start operation of the disinfection apparatus.

8. A system, comprising:

a disinfection apparatus comprising one or more germicidal light sources, wherein the disinfection apparatus is configured such that when the disinfection apparatus is arranged and operational in a room germicidal light generated from the one or more germicidal light sources is emitted to a region between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of the room;

a first sensor to detect occupancy within a room or area in which the disinfection apparatus is arranged;

a switch for activating and deactivating the first sensor;

a second sensor for detecting presence of an individual within a target area a set distance from the disinfection apparatus, wherein the set distance is between approximately 0.3 meters and approximately 3.0 meters; and

a storage medium comprising program instructions which are executable by a processor for commencing operation of the disinfection apparatus to generate and project germicidal light exterior to the disinfection apparatus upon the second sensor detecting presence of an individual in the target area.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions are further for terminating operation of the disinfection source upon the second sensor detecting the individual is absent the target area.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the disinfection apparatus is configured such that when the disinfection apparatus is arranged in a room germicidal light generated from the one or more germicidal light sources is emitted to a region extending at least approximately 7 feet from a floor of the room in the target area.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein disinfection apparatus is fixedly arranged in a room.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the disinfection apparatus comprises wheels to affect portability of the disinfection apparatus.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a remote user interface, wherein the program instructions are further for commencing operation of the disinfection apparatus to generate and project germicidal light exterior to the disinfection apparatus when the switch has activated the first sensor and upon receiving input from the remote user interface to start operation of the disinfection apparatus.
