Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for managing outbound voice messages in a communication system that includes communication devices and a communication server. A temporal mode of either live mode or message mode and a recipient mode of either group mode or direct mode are selected and set for an outbound voice message. Based on the selected settings for temporal mode and recipient mode the originating communication device records a voice message that is relayed to the communication server where it is distributed to other communication devices according to the rules or parameters associated with the temporal and recipient mode selected.

a communication server comprising one or more processors configured to execute instructions to:

set a temporal mode for an outbound voice message from among a plurality of temporal modes executable on a communication device, the temporal modes comprising message mode and live mode;

set a recipient mode for the outbound voice message from among a plurality of recipient modes executable on the communication device, the recipient modes comprising group mode and direct mode;

a plurality of communication devices, each comprising one or more processors configured to execute instructions to:

when the temporal mode is set to message mode and the recipient mode is set to group mode: (i) select a group channel to use for the outbound voice message, the group channel associated with a plurality of communication devices; (ii) record the outbound voice message on an originating communication device; and (iii) transmit the outbound voice message to the communication server over a communication link configured for the selected group channel;

when the temporal mode is set to live mode and the recipient mode is set to group mode: (i) select a group channel to use for the outbound voice message, the group channel associated with a plurality of communication devices; (ii) record the outbound voice message on an originating communication device; and (iii) stream the outbound voice message over a communication link configured for the selected group channel to the communication server; and

when the temporal mode is set to live mode and the recipient mode is set to direct mode: (i) select a direct channel to use for the outbound voice message, the direct channel associated with a specific communication device; (ii) record the outbound voice message on an originating communication device; and (iii) stream the outbound voice message over a communication link configured for the selected direct channel to the communication server.

7. The communication system of claim 6 wherein the communication server comprising one or more processors is further configured to execute instructions to make outbound voice messages set to message mode available to communication devices associated with the selected group channel over a communication link configured for the selected group channel.

8. The communication system of claim 6 wherein the communication server comprising one or more processors is further configured to execute instructions to make outbound voice messages set to message mode available to the communication device associated with the selected direct channel over a communication link configured for the selected direct channel.

9.
