Abstract

Several defibrillators, defibrillator architectures, defibrillator components and methods of operating defibrillators are described. In one aspect, a defibrillator (as for example an automated external defibrillator) that can be powered by a mobile communication device such as a smart cellular phone or a tablet computer is described. Utilizing a phone (or other mobile communication device) as the power supply for an external defibrillator allows the external defibrillator to be smaller and, in some circumstance, removes the need for a battery that stores sufficient energy for shock delivery—which would need to be checked and/or replaced on a regular basis. Additionally, when desired, certain control functionality, computation, data processing, and user instructions can be handled/presented by the mobile communications device thereby further simplifying the defibrillator design and improving the user experience. This architecture takes advantage of the nearly ubiquitous availability of smart phones, tablet computers and other mobile communication devices.

Claims (35)

1. A defibrillator comprising:

an elongated tubular housing having an external opening at a first end of the elongated tubular housing;

a removable end cap arranged to cover the external opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing;

an electrical connector cable for coupling the defibrillator to an external power supply, the electrical connector cable being stored within the elongated tubular housing and accessible through the external opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing when the end cap is removed; and

defibrillator electronics positioned within the elongated tubular housing.

2. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 further comprising a pair of defibrillator pads, the pair of defibrillator pads being stored within the elongated tubular housing and accessible through the external opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing when the end cap is removed.

3. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the elongated tubular housing has a second external opening at a second end of the elongated tubular housing opposite the first end of the elongated tubular housing, the automated external defibrillator further comprising:

a second removable end cap arranged to cover the second external opening at the second end of the elongated tubular housing; and

a pair of defibrillator pads, the pair of defibrillator pads being stored within the elongated tubular housing and accessible through the second external opening at the second end of the elongated tubular housing when the second end cap is removed.

4. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the elongated tubular housing has a substantially oval cross sectional shape.

5. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the elongated tubular housing has at least one flat edge.

6. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the end cap forms a watertight seal with the first end of the tubular housing.

7. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the end cap has a pull feature configured to be pulled to remove the end cap from the first end of the housing.

8. A defibrillator as recited in claim 7 wherein the pull feature includes an annular finger ring with an internal opening sized to receive a user's finger such that the finger ring can be grabbed by a user's finger to remove the end cap from the first end of the housing.

9. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 wherein the defibrillator electronics include:

a first circuit board that carries low voltage components; and

a second board that carries high voltage electrical components.

10. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1 further comprising a battery pack that couples to the elongated tubular housing.

11. A defibrillator comprising:

an elongated tubular housing having two opposing ends, the elongated tubular housing having a generally oval shaped cross sectional that includes at least one flat edge and an opening at a first end of the elongated tubular housing;

a first end cap that covers the opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing;

defibrillator electronics positioned within the elongated tubular housing;

at least one of (i) a pair of defibrillator electrode pads, and (ii) a connector cable for coupling the defibrillator to an external power supply, stored within the elongated tubular housing and retrievable through the opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing.

A defibrillator as recited in claim 11 wherein the elongated tubular housing has first, second and third sections, the first and third sections being located on opposite ends of the elongated tubular housing the second section being located between the first and third section, the defibrillator further comprising a second end cap arranged to cover a second external opening at a second end of the elongated tubular housing.

13. A defibrillator comprising:

an elongated tubular housing having an external opening at a first end of the elongated tubular housing;

an end cap arranged to cover the external opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing;

a pair of defibrillator pads, the pair of defibrillator pads being stored within the elongated tubular housing and accessible through the external opening at the first end of the elongated tubular housing; and

defibrillator electronics positioned within the elongated tubular housing.

14. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13 wherein the elongated tubular housing has at least one flat edge.

15. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13 wherein the end cap forms a watertight seal with the first end of the tubular housing.

16. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13 wherein the end cap has a pull feature configured to be pulled to remove the end cap from the first end of the housing.

17. A defibrillator as recited in claim 16 wherein the pull feature includes an annular finger ring with an internal opening sized to receive a user's finger such that the finger ring can be grabbed by a user's finger to remove the end cap from the first end of the housing.

18. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13 wherein the external opening includes a cutout in a side of the housing at the first end of the housing and the end cap includes a projecting cover that mates with the cutout, whereby the electrode pads are exposed when the end cap is removed.

19. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13 wherein the end cap is removeable and removal of the end cap exposes the electrode pads.
