Abstract

Cards embodying the invention include a core subassembly whose elements define the functionality of the card and a hard coat subassembly attached to the top and/or bottom sides of the core subassembly to protect the core subassembly from wear and tear and being scratched. The core subassembly may be formed solely of plastic layers or of different combinations of plastic and metal layers and may include all the elements of a smart card enabling contactless RF communication and/or direct contact communication. The hard coat subassembly includes a hard coat layer, which typically includes nanoparticles, and a buffer or primer layer formed so as to be attached between the hard coat layer and the core subassembly for enabling the lasering of the core subassembly without negatively impacting the hard coat layer and/or for imparting color to the card.

Claims (15)

1. A laser-personalized card product comprising:

a core subassembly comprised of a non-metal core layer having a top surface and a bottom surface, with non-laser personalized indicia disposed on the top surface and the bottom surface, the core subassembly further comprising a respective non-metal layer having carbon particles attached to the top surface and the bottom surface of the non-metal core layer;

a hard coat subassembly attached to the core subassembly, the hard coat subassembly including:

a removeable carrier layer;

a removable release layer attached to the carrier layer;

a hard coat layer attached to the removeable release layer; and

at least one protective layer directly attached to the hard coat layer, the at least one protective layer comprising an adhesive layer and a plastic primer layer positioned to protect the hard coat layer; and

a finish imparted to the card by the hard coat subassembly when the respective non-metal layer is exposed to a laser beam for forming laser personalized indicia, the finish of the card being devoid of cracks overlying the personalized indicia.

2. The laser-personalized card product of claim 1 , wherein the hard coat layer includes nanoparticles and a carrier for said nanoparticles, the carrier comprising a solvent of water based acrylates, vinyls, urethane, or combination thereof.

3. The laser-personalized card product of claim 2 , wherein the nanoparticles are selected from the group consisting of: silicate nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanoparticles, and silicon dioxide crystalline nanoparticles.

4. The laser-personalized card product of claim 1 , wherein the plastic primer layer comprises colorants, dyes, or pigments.

5. The laser-personalized card product of claim 1 , wherein the hard coat subassembly comprises a top hard coat subassembly attached to an uppermost layer of the core subassembly, the hard coat subassembly further comprising a bottom hard coat subassembly attached to a lowermost layer of the core subassembly.

6. The laser-personalized card product of claim 1 , wherein the non-metal core layer comprises a core plastic layer, and wherein the respective non-metal layer having carbon particles comprise a plurality of clear PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers with graphics on one or more selected PVC layers, and the core subassembly further comprises a magnetic stripe.

7. The laser-personalized card product of claim 6 , wherein the core subassembly comprises at least one of the following: (a) an integrated circuit and an antenna configured to enable radio frequency communication with an external reading device; and (b) an integrated circuit with contacts extending to a surface of the card configured to enable direct contact and communication between an external device and the integrated circuit.

8. The laser-personalized card product of claim 1 , wherein the core subassembly comprises at least one of the following: (a) an integrated circuit and an antenna configured to enable radio frequency communication with an external reading device; and (b) an integrated circuit with contacts extending to a surface of the card configured to enable direct contact and communication between an external device and the integrated circuit.
