Abstract

A radio frequency coil is disclosed that is suitable for use with a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. The radio frequency coil comprises first and second conductive loops connected electrically to each other by a plurality of conductive rungs. The conductive rungs each include a section that is relatively thin that will result in less attenuation to a radiation beam than other thicker sections of the rungs. Insulating regions are also disposed in areas of the radio frequency coil that are bound by adjacent rungs and the conductive loops. Portions of the insulating regions can be configured to provide a substantially similar amount of attenuation to the radiation beam as the relatively thin sections of the conductive rungs.

Claims (13)

1. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided radiation therapy system comprising:

a radiation therapy device configured to emit a radiation beam;

an MRI system that includes an RF transmit coil; and

PIN diode decoupling circuitry located outside a path of the radiation beam when the radiation beam is emitted by the radiation therapy device.

2. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the PIN diode decoupling circuitry is located outside the path of the radiation beam using a coax cable.

3. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the PIN diode decoupling circuitry is located outside the path of the radiation beam utilizing wide parallel conductors with self-cancelling field profiles.

4. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the MRI system is a low-field MRI system having a magnetic field strength of less than 1.0 T.

5. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , further comprising tuning capacitors located outside the path of the radiation beam when emitted by the radiation therapy device.

6. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 5 , wherein the tuning capacitors are placed in rung gaps of the RF transmit coil.

7. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 5 , wherein the tuning capacitors are placed in ring gaps of the RF transmit coil.

8. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the PIN diode decoupling circuitry is located adjacent an end section of a conductive rung of the transmit coil.

9. The MRI-guided radiation therapy system of claim 1 , wherein the MRI system is an open MRI system that further includes a pair of main magnets separated by a gap, and

the RF transmit coil comprises a conductive rung that extends across the gap.
