Abstract

Various systems, devices, NO 2 absorbents, NO 2 scavengers and NO 2 recuperator for generating nitric oxide are disclosed herein. According to one embodiment, an apparatus for converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide can include a receptacle including an inlet, an outlet, a surface-active material coated with an aqueous solution of ascorbic acid and an absorbent wherein the inlet is configured to receive a gas flow and fluidly communicate the gas flow to the outlet through the surface-active material and the absorbent such that nitrogen dioxide in the gas flow is converted to nitric oxide.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining a sample of gas from a system for delivering nitric oxide to a patient, the sample of gas including nitric oxide, oxygen, and water vapor;

diluting the sample of gas with air to reduce a humidity and a concentration of nitric oxide in the sample of gas; and

measuring, after diluting the sample of gas, a concentration of nitric oxide and a concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the sample of gas with a gas analyzer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, before diluting, the humidity of the sample of gas is between 50 to 100%.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a recuperator; and

obtaining the sample of gas includes coupling the gas analyzer to the recuperator.

4. The method of 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a ventilator, a humidifier downstream of the ventilator, and a recuperator downstream of the humidifier;

obtaining the sample of gas includes coupling the gas analyzer to the recuperator; and

the sample of the gas is diluted after the sample of gas is obtained from the recuperator.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a ventilator, a humidifier downstream of the ventilator, and a recuperator downstream of the humidifier; and

the sample is obtained upstream of the ventilator.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the recuperator is thermally insulated.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a recuperator;

the recuperator includes a sample probe connected to the gas analyzer;

the sample of gas is obtained via the sample probe; and

diluting the sample of gas incudes adding a volume of air at the sample probe.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the volume of air is obtained from a high-pressure source.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a recuperator;

the recuperator includes a sample probe connected to the gas analyzer, the sample of gas being obtained via the sample probe; and

diluting the sample of gas incudes adding a volume of ambient air at the sample probe.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a scavenger configured to remove nitrogen dioxide prior to delivery to the patient.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the system for delivering nitric oxide to the patient includes a recuperator containing a scavenger configured to remove nitrogen dioxide prior to delivery to the patient; and

the sample of gas is obtained an outlet of the recuperator.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system for delivering nitric oxide to a patient includes:

a recuperator having an inlet and an outlet, the inlet coupled to a humidifier, the outlet connected to the gas analyzer; and

the sample of gas is obtained from the humidifier after the gas flows through the humidifier.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the system for delivering nitric oxide to a patient includes:

a source of at least one of nitrogen dioxide, dinitrogen tetraoxide, or nitric acid, and

a cartridge having a porous matrix wetted with an antioxidant; and

the sample of gas is obtained from the system for delivering nitric oxide after gas from the source flows through the cartridge such that the cartridge converts nitrogen dioxide into nitric oxide.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein diluting the sample of gas decreases a rate of nitrogen dioxide formation.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein diluting the sample of gas decreases water condensation.
