Abstract

A method of positioning a monitor frame using a counter-balanced hinging mechanism coupled to the monitor frame and seating a display monitor within the monitor frame includes rotating the monitor frame into an approximately horizontal orientation using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism, where the counter-balanced hinging mechanism may include at least one arm linkage assembly, and at least one bias member coupled to the at least one arm linkage assembly. The method also includes aligning an outer edge of the display monitor with an inner surface of the monitor frame, translating the display monitor to a seated position within the monitor frame, and rotating the monitor frame into an approximately vertical orientation using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism.

Claims (34)

1. A method of positioning a display assembly using a counter-balanced hinging mechanism coupled to a plurality of monitor frames and seating a display monitor within at least one of the monitor frames, the method comprising:

coupling the plurality of monitor frames together using a fixture coupled to a periphery of the plurality of monitor frames,

rotating the monitor frames into an approximately horizontal orientation relative to a support surface using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism, the counter-balanced hinging mechanism comprising:

at least one arm linkage assembly; and

at least one bias member coupled to the at least one arm linkage assembly, the at least one bias member configured to apply a variable amount of force to the at least one arm linkage assembly;

aligning an outer edge of the display monitor with an inner surface of the at least one monitor frames;

translating the display monitor to a seated position within the monitor frame; and

rotating the monitor frames into an approximately vertical orientation relative to the support surface using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism by applying a manual force to the at least one monitor frames.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising maintaining the monitor frames in any of a plurality of intermediate orientations between the approximately horizontal orientation and the approximately vertical orientation using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a counter-balancing force to the monitor frames by the counter-balanced hinging mechanism that is equal to and opposite in direction a moment force of the monitor frames and display monitor.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising maintaining the monitor frames in any of a plurality of intermediate orientations between the approximately horizontal orientation and the approximately vertical orientation by applying, using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism, a counter-balancing force against a weight of the monitor frames and display monitor.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising maintaining the plurality of monitor frames in any of a plurality of intermediate orientations between the approximately horizontal orientation and the approximately vertical orientation by applying, using the counter-balanced hinging mechanism, a counter-balancing force against a weight of the plurality of monitor frames and a plurality of display monitors seated in the plurality of monitor frames.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the variable amount of force to the at least one arm linkage assembly comprises applying a counter-balancing force to the at least one arm linkage assembly using at least one of a torsion bar, a torsion spring, or a piston and cylinder device.

7. A system for receiving and supporting a display monitor, the system comprising:

a monitor frame configured to receive and support the display monitor; and

a counter-balanced hinging mechanism coupled to the monitor frame, the counter-balanced hinging mechanism comprising:

a first arm linkage assembly spaced apart from a second arm linkage assembly,

the first arm linkage assembly and the second arm linkage assembly configured to permit pivoting of the monitor frame between an approximately horizontal orientation and an approximately vertical orientation;

a first bias member and a second bias member coupled to the first arm linkage assembly;

a third bias member and a fourth bias member coupled to the second arm linkage assembly,

wherein the first, second, third and fourth bias members are configured to apply a variable amount of force to maintain the monitor frame stationary in any of a plurality of intermediate orientations between the approximately vertical orientation and the approximately horizontal orientation.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the counter-balanced hinging mechanism further comprises an L-shaped support bracket coupled to the at least one bias member, the L-shaped support bracket further configured to be coupled to a support stanchion extending vertically from a support surface, the support stanchion raising and supporting the monitor frame above the support surface.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the counter-balanced hinging mechanism further comprises a cam including a cam surface, and wherein the first or second arm linkage assembly includes a cam roller, and wherein the cam surface of the cam is configured to engage with the cam roller to enable movement of the first or second arm linkage assembly and pivoting of the monitor frame.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the counter-balanced hinging mechanism further comprises a hinge plate coupled at a first location to the L-shaped support bracket and coupled at a second location to the cam, whereby the cam is secured, through the hinge plate, to the L-shaped support bracket.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein to apply the variable amount of force to maintain the monitor frame stationary in any of the plurality of intermediate orientations between the approximately vertical orientation and the approximately horizontal orientation, the at least one bias member is further configured to apply a counter-balancing force substantially equal to and opposite in direction a moment force of the monitor frame and display monitor.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the at least one bias member comprises one of a torsion bar, a torsion spring, or a piston and cylinder device.

13. A counter-balanced hinging mechanism configured to couple to and support a monitor frame in a plurality of intermediate orientations between a maintenance orientation and an operational orientation, the counter-balanced hinging mechanism comprising:

at least one arm linkage assembly configured to permit pivoting of the monitor frame between the maintenance orientation and the operational orientation;

at least one bias member coupled to the at least one arm linkage assembly, the at least one bias member configured to apply a variable amount of force to maintain the monitor frame stationary in any of a plurality of intermediate orientations between the maintenance orientation and the operational orientation, and

an L-shaped support bracket coupled to the at least one bias member, the L-shaped support bracket configured to be coupled to a support stanchion extending vertically from a support surface, the support stanchion configured for raising and supporting the monitor frame above the support surface.

14. The counter-balanced hinging mechanism of claim 13 , wherein the maintenance orientation is an approximately horizontal orientation relative to a support surface and wherein the operational orientation an approximately vertical orientation relative to the support surface.

15. The counter-balanced hinging mechanism of claim 13 , wherein the counter-balanced hinging mechanism further comprises a cam including a cam surface, and wherein the at least one arm linkage assembly includes a cam roller, and wherein the cam surface of the cam is configured to engage with the cam roller to enable movement of the at least one arm linkage assembly and pivoting of the monitor frame.
