United states systems and methods for fluid and component handling
Systems and methods are provided for sample processing. A device may be provided, capable of receiving the sample, and performing one or more of a sample preparation, sample assay, and detection step. The device may be capable of performing multiple assays. The device may comprise one or more modules that may be capable of performing one or more of a sample preparation, sample assay, and detection step. The device may be capable of performing the steps using a small volume of sample.
1. A biological sample processing system for use with at least one cartridge, comprising:
a plurality of sample processing modules, each comprising:
a cartridge receiving location for receiving the cartridge,
a fluid handling system for interacting with the cartridge;
a nucleic acid amplification device comprising at least one heater, an optical detector, and configured to perform a nucleic acid assay; and
a support structure and a mount configured to allow each of the plurality of sample processing modules to be detachable from the support structure;
wherein said plurality of sample processing modules is mounted on the support structure; and
a controller;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to be in electrical, electromagnetic or optoelectronic communication with the controller, said controller being programmed to provide one or more instructions to, and receive responses from, the plurality of sample processing modules to evaluate indicators of sample or system performance;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is interchangeable with another of the plurality of sample processing modules of the system; and
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to perform an analysis simultaneously with another one of the plurality of sample processing modules.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one cartridge contains the sample and reagents.
3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to receive a plurality of cartridges.
4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the reagents comprise polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagents.
5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the reagents comprise loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reagents.
6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heater comprises a temperature cycling heater.
7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heater comprises an isothermal heater for maintaining a constant temperature.
8. A biological sample processing system, comprising:
a plurality of cartridges each containing reagents for a nucleic acid assay;
a plurality of sample processing modules, each configured to receive at least one of said cartridges, each comprising:
a cartridge receiving location for receiving at least one of the cartridges,
a fluid handling system for interacting with said at least one of the cartridges;
a nucleic acid amplification device comprising at least one heater, an optical detector, and configured to perform a nucleic acid assay; and
a support structure and a mount configured to allow each of the plurality of sample processing modules to be detachable from the support structure;
wherein said plurality of sample processing modules is mounted on the support structure; and
a controller;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to be in electrical, electromagnetic or optoelectronic communication with the controller, said controller being programmed to provide one or more instructions to, and receive responses from, the plurality of sample processing modules to evaluate indicators of sample or system performance;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is interchangeable with another of the plurality of sample processing modules of the system; and
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to perform an analysis simultaneously with another one of the plurality of sample processing modules.
9. The system of claim 8 , wherein one of said cartridges contains a sample and a reagent.
10. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to receive more than one of said cartridges.
11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the reagents comprise polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagents.
12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the reagents comprise loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reagents.
13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the heater comprises a temperature cycling heater.
14. A biological sample processing system, comprising:
a housing;
a controller in the housing;
a touchscreen on the housing and in communication with the controller;
a plurality of cartridges;
a plurality of sample processing modules, each configured to receive at least one of said cartridges, each comprising:
a nucleic acid amplification device comprising at least one heater, an optical detector, and configured to perform a nucleic acid assay;
a mount configured to allow each of the plurality of sample processing modules to be detachable;
wherein said plurality of sample processing modules is supported by the housing;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to be in electrical, electromagnetic or optoelectronic communication with the controller, said controller being programmed to provide one or more instructions to, and receive responses from, the plurality of sample processing modules to evaluate indicators of sample or system performance;
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is interchangeable with another of the plurality of sample processing modules of the system; and
wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to perform an analysis simultaneously with another one of the plurality of sample processing modules.
15. The system of claim 14 , wherein said at least one cartridge contains the sample and reagents.
16. The system of claim 14 , wherein each of the plurality of sample processing modules is configured to receive a plurality of cartridges.
17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the reagents comprise polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reagents.
18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the reagents comprise loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reagents.
19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the heater comprises a temperature cycling heater.
20. The system of claim 14 , wherein the heater comprises an isothermal heater for maintaining a constant temperature.
