Abstract

Multiple virtual private network connections to be created without the need for administrative privileges, and network traffic to be routed using a single virtual adapter instead of a dedicated virtual adapter for each virtual network connection.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

directing network traffic to a virtual adapter in a kernel space of an operating system;

routing a data packet of the network traffic to a destination determined by a routing table in a user space of the operating system;

create a connection to a gateway corresponding to the destination; and

remove the connection to the gateway by hiding the connection.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network traffic is for virtual private networks, and the destination corresponds to a first virtual private network of the virtual private networks.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the virtual private networks correspond to applications executing in the user space.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network traffic is directed to the virtual adapter by a routing table in the kernel space.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending the data packet to an encryptor identified by the routing table based on the destination, and encrypting, by the encryptor, the data packet prior to transmitting the data packet to the destination.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the data packet is transmitted to the gateway.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein routing the data packet is performed by a client residing in the user space, and the connection to the gateway is created by the client.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the gateway is a first gateway, the method further comprising using the client to dynamically add tunnels, wherein a first added tunnel corresponds to the first gateway and a second added tunnel corresponds to a second gateway.

9. A computer system comprising:

a processor; and

non-transitory memory in communication with the processor and storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the computer system to:

direct data packets to a virtual adapter in a kernel space of an operating system;

route a first data packet of the data packets to a first destination determined by a routing table in a user space of the operating system;

create connections to gateways corresponding to destinations for the data packets, the connections including a first connection to the first destination; and

remove the first connection by hiding the first connection.

10. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the connections are created by a client residing in the user space, and the instructions further cause the computer system to:

transmit each of the data packets to its respective destination via the respective gateway.

11. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein creating the connections comprises creating at least one of a transmission control protocol connection or a user datagram protocol connection.

12. The computer system of claim 9 , wherein a client residing in the user space creates a first virtual private network, and the first data packet is sent to the first virtual private network.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a computer system to:

direct network traffic to a virtual adapter in a kernel space of an operating system;

route a data packet of the network traffic to a destination determined by a routing table in a user space of the operating system;

create a connection to a gateway corresponding to the destination; and

remove the connection to the gateway by hiding the connection.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the network traffic is directed to the virtual adapter by a routing table in the kernel space.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the computer system to send the data packet to an encryptor identified by the routing table based on the destination, and encrypt, by the encryptor, the data packet prior to transmitting the data packet to the destination.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the data packet is transmitted to the gateway.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein routing the data packet is performed by a client residing in the user space, and wherein the connection to the gateway is created by the client.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the gateway is a first gateway, and wherein the instructions further cause the computer system to dynamically add tunnels, wherein a first added tunnel corresponds to the first gateway.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the network traffic is received from applications executing in the user space.
