Abstract

An electric vehicle includes a frame, a wheel coupled to the frame, and a battery assembly including a housing supported by the frame. The housing includes a top side and a bottom side opposite the top side. A drive assembly of the electric vehicle is at least partially enclosed within a drive housing unit. The drive assembly includes a motor configured to receive power from the battery assembly and a gear assembly configured to transmit torque from the motor to the wheel. The drive housing unit is positioned below the bottom side of the housing.

Claims (42)

1. An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame;

a wheel coupled to the frame;

a battery assembly including a housing supported by the frame, the housing including a top side and a bottom side opposite the top side; and

a drive assembly at least partially enclosed within a drive housing unit, the drive assembly including a motor configured to receive power from the battery assembly and a gear assembly configured to transmit torque from the motor to the wheel,

wherein the drive housing unit is positioned below the bottom side of the housing,

wherein the drive assembly includes an inverter configured to convert the power supplied by the battery assembly from direct current to alternating current,

wherein the drive housing unit includes a gear housing at least partially enclosing the gear assembly, a motor housing at least partially enclosing the motor, and an inverter housing at least partially enclosing the inverter,

wherein the gear housing, the motor housing, and the inverter housing are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the drive housing unit, and

wherein the motor housing is positioned between the gear housing and the inverter housing along the longitudinal axis.

2. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the gear assembly includes a drive shaft rotatable about a drive shaft axis, and wherein the drive shaft axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

3. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the motor includes an output shaft that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis.

4. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal axis extends parallel to a forward travel direction of the electric vehicle.

5. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a coolant pump coupled to a front end of the drive housing unit.

6. The electric vehicle of claim 5 , further comprising a cover coupled to the front end of the drive housing unit, wherein the cover encloses the coolant pump.

7. An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame;

a wheel coupled to the frame;

a battery assembly including a housing supported by the frame, the housing including a top side and a bottom side opposite the top side; and

a drive assembly at least partially enclosed within a drive housing unit, the drive assembly including a motor configured to receive power from the battery assembly and a gear assembly configured to transmit torque from the motor to the wheel,

wherein the drive housing unit is positioned below the bottom side of the housing,

wherein the drive assembly includes an inverter configured to convert the power supplied by the battery assembly from direct current to alternating current,

wherein the drive housing unit includes a gear housing at least partially enclosing the gear assembly, a motor housing at least partially enclosing the motor, and an inverter housing at least partially enclosing the inverter,

wherein the gear housing, the motor housing, and the inverter housing are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the drive housing unit, and

wherein the motor includes an output shaft that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis.

8. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the gear assembly includes a drive shaft rotatable about a drive shaft axis, and wherein the drive shaft axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

9. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the longitudinal axis extends parallel to a forward travel direction of the electric vehicle.

10. The electric vehicle of claim 7 , further comprising a coolant pump coupled to a front end of the drive housing unit.

11. The electric vehicle of claim 10 , further comprising a cover coupled to the front end of the drive housing unit, wherein the cover encloses the coolant pump.

12. An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame;

a wheel coupled to the frame;

a battery assembly including a housing supported by the frame, the housing including a top side and a bottom side opposite the top side;

a drive assembly at least partially enclosed within a drive housing unit, the drive assembly including a motor configured to receive power from the battery assembly and a gear assembly configured to transmit torque from the motor to the wheel; and

a coolant pump coupled to a front end of the drive housing unit,

wherein the drive housing unit is positioned below the bottom side of the housing.

13. The electric vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the drive assembly includes an inverter configured to convert the power supplied by the battery assembly from direct current to alternating current.

14. The electric vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the drive housing unit includes a gear housing at least partially enclosing the gear assembly, a motor housing at least partially enclosing the motor, and an inverter housing at least partially enclosing the inverter.

15. The electric vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the gear housing, the motor housing, and the inverter housing are aligned along a longitudinal axis of the drive housing unit.

16. The electric vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the gear assembly includes a drive shaft rotatable about a drive shaft axis, and wherein the drive shaft axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

17. The electric vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the longitudinal axis extends parallel to a forward travel direction of the electric vehicle.

18. The electric vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising a cover coupled to the front end of the drive housing unit, wherein the cover encloses the coolant pump.
