Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for establishing a metadata exchange channel between a media playback system and a networked microphone system, wherein the networked microphone system comprises a networked microphone device and a networked microphone server. After establishing the metadata exchange channel, the media playback system experiences a metadata exchange triggering event. In response to experiencing the metadata exchange triggering event, the media playback system provides metadata to the networked microphone system via the metadata exchange channel.

Claims (32)

1. A computing system comprising:

one or more processors; and

tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media having instructions encoded thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the computing system to perform a method comprising:

obtaining metadata relating to a configuration of a media playback system comprising a first playback device and a second playback device, wherein the metadata indicates that the first playback device and the second playback device are in a group for synchronous audio playback;

receiving a voice input comprising a context-specific request; and

after receiving the voice input,

(a) generating a response to the voice input based on (i) the context-specific request and (ii) the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system, wherein the response specifies a change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group; and

(b) transmitting the response and thereby (i) triggering the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group and (ii) causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back audio content.

2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises addition of a third playback device to the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing the first, second, and third playback devices in the group to play back the audio content in synchrony.

3. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises removal of the second playback device from the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing only the first playback device to play back the audio content.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein receiving the voice input comprises receiving the voice input from a network microphone device.

5. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system comprises receiving metadata from at least one of the playback device or the second playback device.

6. A method comprising:

obtaining metadata relating to a configuration of a media playback system comprising a first playback device and a second playback device, wherein the metadata indicates that the first playback device and the second playback device are in a group for synchronous audio playback;

receiving a voice input comprising a context-specific request; and

after receiving the voice input,

(a) generating a response to the voice input based on (i) the context-specific request and (ii) the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system, wherein the response specifies a change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group; and

(b) transmitting the response and thereby (i) triggering the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group and (ii) causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back audio content.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises addition of a third playback device to the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing the first, second, and third playback devices in the group to play back the audio content in synchrony.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises removal of the second playback device from the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing only the first playback device to play back the audio content.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein receiving the voice input comprises receiving the voice input from a network microphone device.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein obtaining the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system comprises receiving metadata from at least one of the playback device or the second playback device.

11. Tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media having instructions encoded thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause a computing system to perform a method comprising:

obtaining metadata relating to a configuration of a media playback system comprising a first playback device and a second playback device, wherein the metadata indicates that the first playback device and the second playback device are in a group for synchronous audio playback;

receiving a voice input comprising a context-specific request; and

after receiving the voice input,

(a) generating a response to the voice input based on (i) the context-specific request and (ii) the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system, wherein the response specifies a change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group; and

(b) transmitting the response and thereby (i) triggering the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group and (ii) causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back audio content.

12. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises addition of a third playback device to the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing the first, second, and third playback devices in the group to play back the audio content in synchrony.

13. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the change to the configuration of the media playback system that relates to the group comprises removal of the second playback device from the group, and wherein causing at least one of the playback devices previously in the group to play back the audio content comprises causing only the first playback device to play back the audio content.

14. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein receiving the voice input comprises receiving the voice input from a network microphone device.

15. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein obtaining the metadata relating to the configuration of the media playback system comprises receiving metadata from at least one of the playback device or the second playback device.
