Abstract

A method, computer program product, and computer system for detecting, by a computing device, a desired configuration of a virtual machine (VM) for a plurality of devices. It may be detected that a current state of the plurality of devices does not match the desired configuration of the VM for the plurality of devices, wherein the current state of the plurality of devices may identify that at least one device of the plurality of devices is not present. The desired configuration of the VM may be modified to exclude the at least one device of the plurality of devices that is not present.

Claims (43)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

detecting, by a computing device, a desired configuration for running a virtual machine (VM) on a plurality of devices of a computing environment, wherein each of the plurality of devices represent a device needed and is identified by a respective identifier of a first type of identifier in the desired configuration, and wherein the first type of identifier is formatted to represent what each type of respective device should be for the desired configuration and the detecting includes identifying each of the plurality of devices by their respective identifier of the first type of identifier;

detecting, by the computing device, a plurality of current devices that are present within a current state of the computing environment, wherein detecting further compares the desired configuration for running the VM on the plurality of devices represented by the first type of identifier with the plurality of current devices to detect whether the plurality of devices in the desired configuration are present and available for running the VM;

in response to detecting the plurality of current devices:

mapping each device of the plurality of identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier, wherein each of the second type of identifiers is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM;

in response to detecting that at least one desired device of the desired configuration of the plurality of devices is not present:

modifying, via the computing device, the desired configuration to:

exclude the detected at least one desired device of the plurality of devices that is not present;

for the excluded at least one desired device:

changing the desired configuration to refer to a different desired device that is present in the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, and

mapping each different desired device identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier associated with the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, wherein the second type identifier is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM based on the changed desired configuration; and

launching, on the computing device, the VM on devices specified in the changed desired configuration.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein the VM does not automatically launch on system startup.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of devices are pass-through devices.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein the one or more first type of identifiers includes one or more of: a device serial number field, a device model, a vendor, and Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs).

5. A computer program product residing on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having a plurality of instructions stored thereon which, when executed across one or more processors, causes at least a portion of the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

detecting, by a computing device, a desired configuration for running a virtual machine (VM) on a plurality of devices of a computing environment, wherein each of the plurality of devices represent a device needed and is identified by a respective identifier of a first type of identifier in the desired configuration, and wherein the first type of identifier is formatted to represent what each type of respective device should be for the desired configuration and the detecting includes identifying each of the plurality of devices by their respective identifier of the first type of identifier;

detecting, by the computing device, a plurality of current devices that are present within a current state of the computing environment, wherein detecting further compares the desired configuration for running the VM on the plurality of devices represented by the first type of identifier with the plurality of current devices to detect whether the plurality of devices in the desired configuration are present and available for running the VM;

in response to detecting the plurality of current devices:

mapping each device of the plurality of identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier, wherein each of the second type of identifiers is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM;

in response to detecting that at least one desired device of the desired configuration of the plurality of devices is not present:

modifying, via the computing device, the desired configuration to:

exclude the detected at least one desired device of the plurality of devices that is not present;

for the excluded at least one desired device:

changing the desired configuration to refer to a different desired device that is present in the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, and

mapping each different desired device identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier associated with the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, wherein the second type identifier is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM based on the changed desired configuration; and

launching, on the computing device, the VM on devices specified in the changed desired configuration.

6. The computer program product of claim 5 wherein the VM does not automatically launch on system startup.

7. The computer program product of claim 5 wherein the plurality of devices are pass-through devices.

8. A computing system including one or more processors and one or more memories configured to perform operations comprising:

detecting, by a computing device, a desired configuration for running a virtual machine (VM) on a plurality of devices of a computing environment, wherein each of the plurality of devices represent a device needed and is identified by a respective identifier of a first type of identifier in the desired configuration, and wherein the first type of identifier is formatted to represent what each type of respective device should be for the desired configuration and the detecting includes identifying each of the plurality of devices by their respective identifier of the first type of identifier;

detecting, by the computing device, a plurality of current devices that are present within a current state of the computing environment, wherein detecting further compares the desired configuration for running the VM on the plurality of devices represented by the first type of identifier with the plurality of current devices to detect whether the plurality of devices in the desired configuration are present and available for running the VM;

in response to detecting the plurality of current devices:

mapping each device of the plurality of identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier, wherein each of the second type of identifiers is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM;

in response to detecting that at least one desired device of the desired configuration of the plurality of devices is not present:

modifying, via the computing device, the desired configuration to:

exclude the detected at least one desired device of the plurality of devices that is not present;

for the excluded at least one desired device:

changing the desired configuration to refer to a different desired device that is present in the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, and

mapping each different desired device identified by an identifier of the first type of identifiers to a respective second identifier of a second type of identifier associated with the current plurality of devices of the computing environment, wherein the second type identifier is formatted to represent where each of the respective plurality of current devices are located for running the VM based on the changed desired configuration; and

launching, on the computing device, the VM on devices specified in the changed desired configuration.

9. The computing system of claim 8 wherein the VM does not automatically launch on system startup.

10. The computing system of claim 8 wherein the devices are pass-through devices.
