Abstract

Providing volumes as a service, including: receiving a request to create a volume; determining whether a storage pool that includes one or more cloud-based storage systems includes sufficient resources for provisioning the volume; responsive to determining that the storage pool includes sufficient resources for provisioning the volume, create a volume that is supported by one or more of the cloud-based storage systems in the storage pool; and responsive to determining that the storage pool does not includes sufficient resources for provisioning the volume, expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool.

Claims (52)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request to create a volume;

creating the volume in a storage pool comprising one or more cloud-based storage systems;

monitoring a usage of the volume;

determining, based on the monitoring, that the usage of the volume exceeds a threshold usage; and

based on the determination, expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool for servicing the volume, wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool comprises:

instantiating one or more new cloud-based storage systems including creating one or more cloud-computing instances with local storage; and

adding the one or more new cloud-based storage systems to the storage pool.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request to create the volume is received, from a first virtual private cloud, via an interface that is supported by a second virtual private cloud.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

dynamically scaling the storage pool in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

moving the volume from a first cloud-based storage system to a second cloud-based storage system in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool further comprises reconfiguring one or more of the cloud-based storage systems that are included in the storage pool.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request includes an application identifier, further comprising:

identifying, based on the application identifier, an application-specific template for provisioning the volume;

determining a first quantity of resources that are expected to be consumed by the volume based on the identified application-specific template;

comparing the first quantity of resources to a second quantity of resources that are available in the storage pool; and

based on the comparison, determining that the storage pool includes a sufficient quantity of resources to provision the volume.

7. A virtual private cloud contained in a cloud computing environment, the virtual private cloud including computer program instructions that, when executed on computer hardware, cause the virtual private cloud to carry out the steps of:

receiving a request to create a volume;

creating the volume in a storage pool comprising one or more cloud-based storage systems;

monitoring a usage of the volume;

determining, based on the monitoring, that the usage of the volume exceeds a threshold usage; and

based on the determination, expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool for servicing the volume, wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool comprises:

instantiating one or more new cloud-based storage systems including creating one or more cloud-computing instances with local storage; and

adding the one or more new cloud-based storage systems to the storage pool.

8. The virtual private cloud of claim 7 , wherein the request to create the volume is received, from a first virtual private cloud, via an interface that is supported by a second virtual private cloud.

9. The virtual private cloud of claim 7 , further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed on computer hardware, cause the virtual private cloud to carry out the steps of:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

dynamically scaling the storage pool in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

10. The virtual private cloud of claim 7 , further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed on computer hardware, cause the virtual private cloud to carry out the steps of:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

moving the volume from a first cloud-based storage system to a second cloud-based storage system in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

11. The virtual private cloud of claim 7 , wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool further comprises reconfiguring one or more of the cloud-based storage systems that are included in the storage pool.

12. A computer program product for providing volumes as a service, the computer program product including a computer readable storage medium having computer readable program instructions that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to carry out the steps of:

receiving a request to create a volume;

creating the volume in a storage pool comprising one or more cloud-based storage systems monitoring a usage of the volume;

determining, based on the monitoring, that the usage of the volume exceeds a threshold usage; and

based on the determination, expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool for servicing the volume, wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool comprises:

instantiating one or more new cloud-based storage systems including creating one or more cloud-computing instances with local storage; and

adding the one or more new cloud-based storage systems to the storage pool.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein the request to create the volume is received, from a first virtual private cloud, via an interface that is supported by a second virtual private cloud.

14. The computer program product of claim 12 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to carry out the steps of:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

dynamically scaling the storage pool in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

15. The computer program product of claim 12 further comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to carry out the steps of:

monitoring usage of the volume; and

moving the volume from a first cloud-based storage system to a second cloud-based storage system in dependence upon the usage of the volume.

16. The computer program product of claim 12 , wherein expanding the resources that are included in the storage pool further comprises reconfiguring one or more of the cloud-based storage systems that are included in the storage pool.
