Abstract

Systems and methods for processing sensor analyte data are disclosed, including initiating calibration, updating calibration, evaluating clinical acceptability of reference and sensor analyte data, and evaluating the quality of sensor calibration. The sensor can be calibrated using a calibration set of one or more matched sensor and reference analyte data pairs. Reference data resulting from benchtop testing an analyte sensor prior to its insertion can be used to provide initial calibration of the sensor data. Reference data from a short term continuous analyte sensor implanted in a user can be used to initially calibrate or update sensor data from a long term continuous analyte sensor.

Claims (14)

1. An analyte monitoring system comprising:

processing electronics configured to receive a signal generated by a transcutaneous analyte sensor having one or more sensor electrical contacts on an ex vivo portion of the transcutaneous analyte sensor and to generate sensor data based at least in part on the received signal; and

a display device operably connected to the processing electronics, wherein the display device comprises a processor, and wherein the display device is configured to display estimated analyte concentrations of a host based at least in part on the generated sensor data;

wherein the processor is configured to:

calibrate at least some of the generated sensor data using a conversion function, wherein the conversion function comprises at least a sensor sensitivity value, wherein the sensor sensitivity value is based at least in part on information of a representative distribution of sensor sensitivities, wherein the representative distribution of sensor sensitivities is determined prior to sensor insertion, wherein the processor is configured to convert the generated sensor data using the conversion function, and wherein the processor is configured to generate an estimated analyte value based at least in part on the converted sensor data.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conversion function comprises a most probable sensitivity based at least in part on the representative distribution of sensor sensitivities.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the conversion function comprises a sensor baseline based at least in part on a representative distribution of sensor baselines, wherein the representative distribution of sensor baselines is determined prior to sensor insertion.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the baseline comprises a most probable baseline based at least in part on the representative distribution of sensor baselines.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor sensitivity value is based at least in part on in-vitro sensitivity measurements.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the representative distribution of sensor sensitivities is based at least in part on in vivo testing of at least one other transcutaneous glucose sensor or in vitro testing.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display device is configured to display the converted sensor data in substantially real time.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display device is wirelessly connected to the processing electronics.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a mobile phone.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor sensitivity value is also based at least in part on an in vivo vs. in vitro sensitivity relationship that is determined prior to sensor insertion.
