Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, detecting a plurality of mobile devices in proximity to a device. Further embodiments can include identifying a user identifier associated with each of the plurality of mobile devices resulting in a plurality of user identifiers. Additional embodiments can include obtaining a user profile associated with each of the plurality of user identifiers resulting in a plurality of user profiles. Also, embodiments can include identifying a first user profile having a first priority among the plurality of user profiles. Further embodiments can include provisioning the first user profile on a media processor or set top box and providing media content for presentation on a display according to the first user profile. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (68)

1. A device comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

obtaining, by the processing system, a plurality of user profiles for a media processor, wherein the obtaining the plurality of user profiles comprises obtaining a respective user profile associated with each respective mobile device of a plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the device responsive to detecting each respective mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the device, and wherein the obtaining the plurality of user profiles is based on providing, to a management server over a communication network, a user identifier for each respective mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices detected in proximity to the device;

determining, by the processing system, a respective relative priority for each respective user profile of the plurality of user profiles;

provisioning, by the processing system, a first user profile having a highest respective relative priority on the device; and

providing media content for presentation on a display according to the first user profile wherein, based on a first determination that the device is configured such that the first user profile has the highest respective relative priority on the device, the provisioning the first user profile comprises provisioning the first user profile regardless of whether another user profile of the plurality of user profiles is a master user profile that has a highest user priority over all user profiles of the plurality of user profiles, and wherein, based on a second determination that a second user profile of the plurality of user profiles is the master user profile, the providing the media content is in accordance with control settings defined in the second user profile for the first user profile.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

obtaining the master user profile having the highest user priority over all user profiles of the plurality of user profiles; and

associating second control settings of selected respective user profiles of the plurality of user profiles according to the master user profile.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the associating the second control settings of the selected respective user profiles of the plurality of user profiles comprises associating respective parental controls with respective child user profiles associated with respective children.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the master user profile is associated with a head of a household and where each respective member of the household has a respective user profile of the plurality of user profiles.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

associating the control settings with the first user profile.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the device comprises a set top box.

7. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

detecting a plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the processing system;

identifying a plurality of user identifiers, each user identifier of the plurality of user identifiers being associated with a mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices;

obtaining a plurality of user profiles, each user profile of the plurality of user profiles being associated with a user identifier of the plurality of user identifiers, each user profile having a priority relative to other priorities of other user profiles of the plurality of user profiles, wherein the identifying the plurality of user identifiers is responsive to the detecting the plurality of mobile devices, and wherein the obtaining the plurality of user profiles is responsive to providing the plurality of user identifiers to a management server over a communication network;

for a media processor, identifying a first user profile of the plurality of user profiles based on the plurality of user profiles, wherein the identifying the first user profile comprises identifying a user profile having a highest priority relative to other priorities of the other user profiles;

provisioning the first user profile on the media processor; and

providing media content for presentation by the media processor on a display according to the first user profile, wherein, based on a first determination that the media processor is configured such that the first user profile has the highest priority on the media processor, the provisioning the first user profile comprises provisioning the first user profile regardless of whether another user profile of the plurality of user profiles is a master user profile for an account associated with the media processor, and wherein, based on a second determination that a second user profile of the plurality of user profiles is the master user profile for the account associated with the media processor, the providing the media content is in accordance with a control setting defined in the second user profile for the first user profile.

8. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

after the provisioning the first user profile on the media processor, detecting a new mobile device in proximity to the processing system;

identifying a new user identifier associated with the new mobile device;

obtaining a new user profile associated with the new user identifier;

if a priority of the new user profile is higher than a priority of the first user profile, provisioning the new user profile on the media processor; and

providing media content for presentation by the media processor on a display according to the new user profile.

9. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

obtaining the master user profile, the master user profile being associated with a head of a household;

obtaining a plurality of family member user profiles, wherein each family member user profile of the plurality of family member user profiles is associated with a member of the household; and

associating control settings of the master user profile with each family member user profile of the plurality of family member user profiles to be used when providing media content for presentation by the media processor on the display according to a family member user profile of the plurality of family member user profiles.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise, for each respective media processor of a plurality of media processors of the household:

designating a respective family member user profile as a first priority user profile, wherein the designating the respective family member user profile as the first priority user profile comprises establishing the first priority user profile with a highest priority among other user profiles;

provisioning the respective family member user profile on the respective media processor; and

providing media content for presentation by the respective media processor on a respective display of a plurality of displays according to the respective family member user profile.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise, for a particular media processor of the plurality of media processors:

after provisioning the respective family member user profile, detecting a new mobile device in proximity to the particular media processor of the plurality of media processors;

identifying a new user identifier associated with the new mobile device;

obtaining a new user profile associated with the new user identifier;

if a priority of the new user profile is higher than a priority of the respective family member user profile provisioned on the particular media processor, provisioning the new user profile on the particular media processor; and

providing media content for presentation by the particular media processor on a display according to the new user profile.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

sending a notification to each mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices, the notification identifying which user profile was provisioned on the media processor.

13. A method, comprising:

detecting, by a processing system including a processor, a plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the processing system;

identifying, by the processing system, a plurality of user identifiers, wherein the identifying comprises identifying, by the processing system, a respective user identifier associated with each respective mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices;

obtaining, by the processing system, a plurality of user profiles, wherein the obtaining comprises obtaining a respective user profile associated with each user identifier of the plurality of user identifiers;

determining, by the processing system, a respective relative priority for each respective user profile of at least some user profiles of the plurality of user profiles;

identifying, by the processing system, a first user profile having a highest respective relative priority;

providing, by the processing system, media content for presentation on a display according to the first user profile;

detecting, by the processing system, a particular mobile device in proximity to the processing system, wherein the processing system comprises a media processor operated by a media content provider;

identifying, by the processing system, a particular user identifier associated with the particular mobile device;

determining, by the processing system, that a user associated with the particular user identifier does not have a user profile associated with an account with the media content provider for the media processor;

determining, by the processing system, that the user associated with the particular user identifier is a subscriber to the media content provider;

obtaining, by the processing system, a particular user profile associated with the particular user identifier; and

providing, by the processing system, media content for presentation on the display according to the particular user profile.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the processing system comprises at least one set top box communicatively coupled to at least one display unit including the display.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the media processor is communicatively coupled to at least one display unit including the display.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

provisioning, by a plurality of set top boxes of the processing system, a respective highest priority user profile on each respective set top box of the processing system; and

providing, by the processing system, media content for presentation on respective displays according to the respective highest priority user profile.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

obtaining a master user profile having a highest user priority over all user profiles of the plurality of user profiles; and

associating control settings of selected respective user profiles of the plurality of user profiles according to the master user profile.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the particular mobile device is not included in the plurality of mobile devices.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the detecting each respective mobile device of the plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the device is based on location information provided by the plurality of mobile devices.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the detecting the plurality of mobile devices in proximity to the processing system is based on location information provided by the plurality of mobile devices.
