Abstract

A solid electrolytic capacitor containing a capacitor element is provided. The capacitor element contains a sintered porous anode body, a dielectric that overlies the anode body, and a solid electrolyte that overlies the dielectric that includes a conductive polymer. The capacitor does not exhibit an anomalous charging current when charged at a constant voltage rate increase of 120 volts per second, as determined at an operating frequency of 120 Hz and temperature of about 23° C.

Claims (23)

A solid electrolytic capacitor comprising a capacitor element that contains a sintered porous anode body, a dielectric that overlies the anode body, and a solid electrolyte that overlies the dielectric that includes a conductive polymer containing pre-polymerized conductive polymer particles, wherein the capacitor does not exhibit an anomalous charging current when charged at a constant voltage rate increase of 120 volts per second, as determined at an operating frequency of 120 Hz and temperature of about 23° C.

2. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , wherein the actual charging current for the capacitor is the same or less than the ideal charging current when the capacitor is charged at a constant voltage rate increase of 120 volts per second, as determined at an operating frequency of 120 Hz and temperature of about 23° C.

3. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor does not exhibit an anomalous charging current after being exposed to temperature of 125° C. for 16 hours.

4. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor does not exhibit an anomalous charging current after being exposed to temperature of 150° C. for 4 hours.

5. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , further comprising an anode lead extending from a front surface of the capacitor element.

6. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 5 , further comprising an anode termination that is in electrical contact with the anode lead and a cathode termination that is in electrical connection with the solid electrolyte.

7. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , further comprising a housing within which the capacitor element is enclosed.

8. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 7 , wherein the housing is formed from a resinous material that encapsulates the capacitor element.

9. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 7 , wherein the housing defines an interior cavity within which the capacitor element is positioned, wherein the interior cavity has a gaseous atmosphere.

10. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , wherein the anode body includes tantalum.

11. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 1 , wherein the conductive polymer has repeating units of the following formula:

wherein,

R 7 is a linear or branched, C 1 to C 18 alkyl radical, C 5 to C 12 cycloalkyl radical, C 6 to C 14 aryl radical, C 7 to C 18 aralkyl radical, or a combination thereof; and

q is an integer from 0 to 8.

12. The solid electrolytic capacitor of claim 11 , wherein the conductive polymer is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene).
