Abstract

Methods, computer program products, and apparatus for open tab transactions. A customer device, e.g., a smart phone, can generate an order for purchasing one or more goods or services from a merchant. A list of the items can be stored in a data structure designated as a tab. The list is routed to a merchant device, e.g., a tablet computer. The customer device can be carried by a user to the merchant. When the user reaches the merchant, the customer device or merchant device can receive a request to add an additional item to the list. The tab remains open and modifiable until the customer device or merchant device receives an input to close it. Payment for the goods or services listed in the modified tab is processed upon closing of the tab.

Claims (52)

1. A method of facilitating transaction processing, the method comprising:

receiving, at a server associated with a payment processing service (PPS) and from a merchant point of sale (POS) device, payment medium information associated with a customer that is read from a payment medium associated with the customer by the merchant POS device for use in a first transaction between the customer and a merchant;

processing, by the server, the first transaction using the payment medium information:

generating, by the server, a link for the customer such that activation of the link causes a customer account to be automatically created for the customer in a data store of the PPS, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

receiving, at the server, an indication that the link has been activated by a customer device and that the customer device is located in proximity with the merchant POS device, wherein the customer device is associated with the customer;

creating, at the server automatically in response to the receiving of the indication that the link has been activated by the customer device and that the customer device is located in proximity with the merchant POS device, the customer account in the data store of the PPS, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

receiving, at the server, an indication of a second transaction involving the customer;

retrieving, by the server and from the data store, the payment medium information in response to receiving the indication of the second transaction involving the customer and based on identification of the customer account within the data store; and

processing, at the server, the second transaction involving the customer as a cardless transaction using the payment medium information retrieved from the data store and associated with the customer account in the data store.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment medium associated with the customer is a payment card associated with the customer, wherein the payment medium information is read by a card reader of the merchant POS device from the payment card associated with the customer.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the server, a receipt, wherein the receipt includes the link; and

sending, from the server to the customer device associated with the customer, the receipt.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying that the link has been activated is based on receipt of information by the server from the customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device activating the link.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server and from the customer device associated with the customer, location information identifying one or more locations of the customer device, the location information generated by the customer device based on receipt of one or more wireless positioning signals via a receiver of the customer device; and

identifying, by the server and based on the location information, that the customer device has crossed an edge of a geofence area, wherein processing the second transaction is performed automatically in response to identifying that the customer device has crossed the edge of the geofence area.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the receiver of the customer device is a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver of the customer device.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more wireless positioning signals are received by the receiver of the customer device from one or more wireless signal sources located within the geofence area.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server, a personal identification number (PIN), wherein processing the first transaction uses the PIN, wherein the PIN is associated with the customer account in the data store, and wherein processing the second transaction includes using the PIN after retrieving the PIN from the data store based on identification of the customer account within the data store.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server, a first request to process the first transaction between the customer and the merchant; and

receiving, by the server and from a POS application executing on the merchant POS device, the payment medium information associated with the customer.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein receiving the payment medium information associated with the customer occurs in response to the payment medium associated with the payment medium information having been presented by the customer to the merchant during the first transaction.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server, a second indication that the link has been activated.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the link is a hypertext link.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein activation of the link causes prefilling of the customer account with the payment medium information in the data store of the PPS.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the server, a second request to process the second transaction involving the customer, the second request including identifier information associated with the customer account corresponding to the customer, wherein the identification of the customer account within the data store is based on the identifier information.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server and from the customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device having activated the link, the identifier information associated with the customer account.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server and from the customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device having activated the link, a personal identification number (PIN); and

retrieving, by the server from the data store, the PIN based on the identification of the customer account using the identifier information associated with the customer account, wherein processing the second transaction involving the customer as the cardless transaction includes using the PIN.

17. A server associated with a payment processing service (PPS) for facilitating transaction processing, the server comprising:

one or more memory units storing instructions; and

one or more processors executing the instructions, wherein execution of the instructions by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to:

receive, and from a merchant point of sale (POS) device, payment medium information associated with a customer that is read from a payment medium associated with the customer by the merchant POS device for use in a first transaction between the customer and a merchant;

process the first transaction using the payment medium information:

generate a link for the customer such that activation of the link causes a customer account to be automatically created for the customer in a data store of the PPS, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

receive an indication that the link has been activated by a customer device and that the customer device is located in proximity with the merchant POS device, wherein the customer device is associated with the customer;

create, automatically in response to the receiving of the indication that the link has been activated by the customer device and that the customer device is located in proximity with the merchant POS device, the customer account in the data store of the PPS, wherein the payment medium information is associated with the customer account in the data store;

receive an indication of a second transaction involving the customer;

retrieve, from the data store, the payment medium information in response to receiving the indication of the second transaction involving the customer and based on identification of the customer account within the data store; and

process the second transaction involving the customer as a cardless transaction using the payment medium information retrieved from the data store and associated with the customer account in the data store.

18. The server of claim 17 , wherein the payment medium associated with the customer is a payment card associated with the customer, wherein the payment medium information is read by a card reader of the merchant POS device from the payment card associated with the customer.

19. The server of claim 17 , wherein execution of the instructions by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to:

generate a receipt, wherein the receipt includes the link; and

send, to a customer device associated with the customer, the receipt.

20. The server of claim 17 , wherein identifying that the link has been activated is based on receipt of information by the server from the customer device associated with the customer in response to the customer device activating the link.
