Abstract

A vaginal speculum apparatus includes a portable illumination assembly that is releasably attached to one of the upper blade and lower blade of a disposable vaginal speculum. The portable illumination assembly is defined by a housing that retains at least one LED and a portable power supply. The portable illumination assembly can be energized by an externally accessible member after the illuminator has been attached to the speculum.

Claims (32)

1. A vaginal speculum comprising:

a top blade;

a lower blade, each of the top and lower blades including a distal trough-shaped blade portion and a proximal end;

a handle portion integral to the lower blade and downwardly extending from the proximal end of the lower blade, the handle portion including a hollow receiving cavity extending therethrough; and

an illumination assembly comprising:

a compact housing fitted within the hollow receiving cavity of the handle portion;

a light source; and

at least one battery coupled to the light source, the light source being disposed at a distal end of the illumination assembly and adjacent the distal trough-shaped blade portion of the lower blade, enabling illumination to be directed toward a medical target, wherein the proximal end of the lower blade includes a curved portion between the handle portion and the distal trough-shaped blade portion, the light source being disposed on a surface of the curved portion and in which the compact housing of the illumination assembly includes a fluid-tight enclosure formed between a wall of the housing and the surface of the curved portion of the lower blade, in which the light source is disposed within the fluid-tight enclosure.

2. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the light source is an LED.

3. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the exterior of the handle portion includes a plurality of ribs.

4. The speculum according to claim 1 , including a mechanism for moving the top and lower blades relative to one another.

The speculum according to claim 4 , in which the mechanism for moving the top and lower blades relative to one another includes a yoke attached to the handle portion and a lever portion extending from the proximal end of the first top blade, the yoke including an articulated portion that engages the lever portion.

6. The speculum according to claim 4 , in which the mechanism for moving the top and lower blades relative to one another creates a spacing between the distal trough-shaped blade portions of the top and lower blades in order to dilate a patient.

7. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the speculum is made from a molded plastic.

8. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the illumination assembly is integral to the handle portion and lower blade.

9. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the proximal ends of the top and lower blade combine to form a rear aperture and in which the illumination assembly is disposed so as not to interfere with viewing of the medical target through the rear aperture.

10. The speculum according to claim 1 , in which the handle portion includes at least one feature for engaging the illumination assembly.

11. A method of manufacturing a speculum, the method comprising:

providing a top blade and a lower blade, each of the top and lower blades including a distal trough-shaped blade portion and a proximal end,

providing a handle portion integral to the lower blade and downwardly extending from the proximal end of the lower blade, the handle portion including a hollow receiving cavity extending therethrough and the proximal end of the lower blade including a curved portion between the handle portion and the distal trough-shaped portion;

providing an illumination assembly comprising:

a compact housing fitted within the hollow receiving cavity,

a light source, and

at least one battery within the compact housing and coupled to the light source; and

positioning the illumination assembly at least partially within the hollow receiving cavity with the light source being disposed at a distal end of the illumination assembly and on a surface of the curved portion adjacent the distal trough-shaped blade portion of the lower blade to enable illumination to be directed toward a medical target wherein the compact housing of the illumination assembly further includes a fluid-tight enclosure formed between a wall of the housing and the curved portion of the lower blade, the fluid-tight enclosure containing the light source.

12. The method according to claim 11 , in which the illumination assembly is made integral to the handle portion and lower blade.

13. The method according to claim 11 , in which the proximal ends of the top and lower blade combine to form a rear aperture, the method including the further step of positioning the illumination assembly so as not to interfere with viewing of the medical target through the formed rear aperture.

14. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising:

providing a moving mechanism to create a spacing between the distal trough-shaped blade portions of the top and lower blades for dilating a patient.

15. The method according to claim 14 , in which the moving mechanism includes a yoke attached to the handle portion and a lever portion extending from the proximal end of the top blade, the yoke including an articulated portion that engages the lever portion.

16. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising providing at least one feature on the handle portion for engaging the illumination assembly.

17. The method according to claim 11 , in which the top and lower blades and handle portion are formed from a molded plastic.
