Abstract

A high efficiency configuration for a solar cell module comprises solar cells arranged in an overlapping shingled manner and conductively bonded to each other in their overlapping regions to form super cells, which may be arranged to efficiently use the area of the solar module.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining a solar cell comprising a front surface to be illuminated by light, an oppositely positioned rear surface, and at least one rear surface bus bar disposed on the rear surface of the solar cell; and

cutting a scribe line parallel to a long axis of the rear surface bus bar through the rear surface bus bar into the rear surface of the solar cell.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

identifying with a camera a location on the front surface of the solar cell of a front surface bus bar having a long axis oriented parallel to the long axis of the rear surface bus bar; and

cutting the scribe line at a location on the rear surface of the solar cell referenced to the location of the front surface bus bar determined with the camera.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the front surface of the solar cell comprises a plurality of fiducials on the front surface; and

identifying a location of the front surface bus bar on the front surface of the solar cell with the camera comprises identifying the locations of the fiducials on the front surface of the solar cell with the camera.

4. The method of claim 2 , comprising cutting the scribe line at a location on the rear surface of the solar cell spaced apart from an edge of the front surface bus bar by a predetermined distance of about 0.1 mm to about 0.6 mm.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the front surface bus bar partially but not entirely overlies the rear surface bus bar.

6. The method of claim 5 , comprising cutting the scribe line at a location on the rear surface of the solar cell spaced apart from an edge of the front surface bus bar by a predetermined distance of about 0.1 mm to about 0.6 mm.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

separating the solar cell along the scribe line to form a first smaller solar cell comprising the front surface bus bar and a second small solar cell comprising a portion of the rear surface bus bar; and

arranging the first smaller solar cell and the second smaller solar cell in a shingled manner with the front surface bus bar on the first smaller solar cell conductively bonded to the portion of the rear surface bus bar on the second smaller solar cell to electrically and mechanically connect the first smaller solar cell and the second smaller solar cell in series.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising overlapping the first smaller solar cell and the second smaller solar cell by about 0.5 mm to about 1.5 mm.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the front and rear surfaces of the solar cell are square or pseudo-square in shape;

the long axis of the rear surface bus bar is oriented parallel to an edge of the solar cell; and

the rear surface bus bar extends for substantially the full length of the edge of the solar cell.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

identifying with a camera a location on the front surface of the solar cell of a front surface bus bar having a long axis oriented parallel to the long axis of the rear surface bus bar;

cutting the scribe line at a location on the rear surface of the solar cell referenced to the location of the front surface bus bar determined with the camera;

separating the solar cell along the scribe line to form a first smaller solar cell comprising the front surface bus bar and a second small solar cell comprising a portion of the rear surface bus bar; and

arranging the first smaller solar cell and the second smaller solar cell in a shingled manner with the front surface bus bar on the first smaller solar cell conductively bonded to the portion of the rear surface bus bar on the second smaller solar cell to electrically and mechanically connect the first smaller solar cell and the second smaller solar cell in series.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the front surface bus bar partially but not entirely overlies the rear surface bus bar.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the front and rear surfaces of the solar cell are square or pseudo-square in shape;

the long axes of the rear surface bus bar and the front surface bus bar are oriented parallel to an edge of the solar cell; and

the rear surface bus bar and the front surface bus bar extend for substantially the full length of the edge of the solar cell.
