Modular surgical system
A surgical instrument equipped with a coupler arrangement for coupling end effectors to an elongated shaft assembly of the surgical instrument. The end effectors may include a pair of jaws in the form of a carrier supporting a surgical staple cartridge and an anvil. The anvil is movable relative to the carrier in opening and closing directions. The end effector may include an articulation joint that facilitates pivotal travel of the carrier and anvil as a unit relative to the elongated shaft assembly in the same directions in which the anvil is opened and closed relative to the carrier.
1. A surgical system, comprising:
an instrument, comprising:
a handle;
a shaft extending from said handle;
a rotatable adapter; and
a biasing member configured to bias said rotatable adapter from an unlocked position to a locked position; and
a stapling assembly, comprising:
a proximal connection shaft releasably attachable to said shaft, wherein said proximal connection shaft is insertable into said shaft to a fully-seated depth, and wherein said proximal connection shaft is biased into said fully-seated depth by said rotatable adapter and said biasing member if said proximal connection shaft is partially seated in said shaft when said rotatable adapter is rotated toward said locked position;
a first jaw;
a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and
a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling assembly further comprises an articulation joint.
3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said instrument comprises a staple firing drive configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said staple firing drive comprises an electric motor.
4. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said instrument comprises a staple firing drive configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said staple firing drive comprises a coupling member comprising a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke.
5. A surgical system, comprising:
an instrument, comprising:
a handle;
a shaft extending from said handle;
a rotatable adapter rotatable from a locked position to an unlocked position by a clinician; and
a biasing member configured to bias said rotatable adapter from said unlocked position to said locked position when the clinician releases said rotatable adapter; and
a stapling assembly, comprising:
a proximal connection shaft releasably attachable to said shaft, wherein said proximal connection shaft is insertable into said shaft to a fully-seated depth, and wherein said proximal connection shaft is biased into said fully-seated depth by said rotatable adapter and said biasing member if said proximal connection shaft is partially seated in said shaft when said rotatable adapter is rotated toward said locked position;
a first jaw;
a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and
a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
6. The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein said stapling assembly further comprises an articulation joint.
7. The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein said instrument comprises a staple firing drive configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said staple firing drive comprises an electric motor.
8. The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein said instrument comprises a staple firing drive configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said staple firing drive comprises a coupling member comprising a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke.
9. A surgical system, comprising:
an instrument, comprising:
a housing;
a shaft extending from said housing;
a rotatable adapter; and
a biasing member configured to bias said rotatable adapter from an unlocked position to a locked position; and
a stapling assembly, comprising:
a proximal connection shaft releasably attachable to said shaft, wherein said proximal connection shaft is insertable into said shaft to a fully-seated depth, and wherein said proximal connection shaft is biased into said fully-seated depth by said rotatable adapter and said biasing member if said proximal connection shaft is partially seated in said shaft when said rotatable adapter is rotated toward said locked position;
a first jaw;
a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and
a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
10. A surgical system, comprising:
an instrument, comprising:
a housing;
a shaft extending from said housing;
a rotatable adapter rotatable from a locked position to an unlocked position by a clinician; and
a biasing member configured to bias said rotatable adapter from said unlocked position to said locked position when the clinician releases said rotatable adapter; and
a stapling assembly, comprising:
a proximal connection shaft releasably attachable to said shaft, wherein said proximal connection shaft is insertable into said shaft to a fully-seated depth, and wherein said proximal connection shaft is biased into said fully-seated depth by said rotatable adapter and said biasing member if said proximal connection shaft is partially seated in said shaft when said rotatable adapter is rotated toward said locked position;
a first jaw;
a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and
a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
